SEPSIS BY DR.AHMED KENSARAH Chairman Dep. Of Surgery DEFINITION Sepsis can be defined as the body,s response to an infection. An infection is caused by microorganisms or ;germs; (usually bacteria) invading the body, and can be limited to a particular body region (tooth abscess) or can be widespread in the bloodstream (called ;septicemia;) People at risk Are very young (because their immune systems are not completely developed) The elderly population,especially those with other medical illnesses such as diabetes. Have a weakened (compromised) immune system because of treatments such as chemotherapy for cancer,steroids for inflammatory conditions OR because of an illness, such as AIDS. Have wounds or injuries Have certain addictive habits such as alcohol or drugs. Are receiving certain treatments or examinations e.g.,IV catheters,urinary catheters,drains Symptoms And Signs Increase heart rate>90 beats per minute. Body temperature>38c. Hyper ventilation>20,PaCO2<32mm Hg. White blood cell count>12000 or <4000 cells/mm3 Treatment Antibiotics. Surgical drainage. Fluid replacement. Appropriate support for organ dysfunction. The forms of sepsis Uncomplicated sepsis. Severe sepsis. Septic chock. Complications Spread of the infection. Bactraemia. Septic joint. DIC. Acute tubular necrosis. Arrythmia.
