Spread by respiratory tract, poor hygiene, can be found in polluted water • Bacterial –quite rare but serious ,needs urgent treatment. • About 2,500 – 3,000 reported cases each year • Meningococcal – A, B, & C (B most common) • Pneumococcal • Hib vaccine introduce in routine immunisation programme in1992 Septicaemia • Some bacteria can cause septicaemia (blood poisoning) • The germs multiply uncontrollably in blood stream and cause septicaemia before they reach the meninges • In other cases the bacteria infect the bloodstream and the meninges at the same time causing both. Signs and symptoms of septicaemia • Can develop quickly • Rash appears under the skin • Starts as cluster of tiny spots like pin pricks • If not treated –get bigger and look like bruises • Anywhere on the body • Do not turn white when they are pressed
