Types of meningitis
• Viral – most common, hardly ever life
threatening. Spread by respiratory tract, poor
hygiene, can be found in polluted water
• Bacterial –quite rare but serious ,needs urgent
treatment.
• About 2,500 – 3,000 reported cases each year
• Meningococcal – A, B, & C (B most common)
• Pneumococcal
• Hib vaccine introduce in routine immunisation
programme in1992
Septicaemia
• Some bacteria can cause septicaemia
(blood poisoning)
• The germs multiply uncontrollably in blood
stream and cause septicaemia before they
reach the meninges
• In other cases the bacteria infect the
bloodstream and the meninges at the
same time causing both.
Signs and symptoms of
septicaemia
• Can develop quickly
• Rash appears under the skin
• Starts as cluster of tiny spots like pin
pricks
• If not treated –get bigger and look like
bruises
• Anywhere on the body
• Do not turn white when they are pressed
