Can’t reproduce by itself Doesn’t move No homeostasis What do you think? Structure-see book pictures for tail,DNA, Capsid, Coat • Phage=typically used as another word for virus, means that it is infectious. Viral Cycle • Need: 1 virus, 1 host-cell specific to the virus. • Viral recognition-viruses disguise themselves w/ their protein coat so that bacteria let them in (they “think” that the virus is something needed.) • The virus then attaches and pumps in its provirus (DNA), which joins w/ the host’s DNA for replication. (see camera) Cycles continued • Lytic cycle-viral cycle where the host is reprogrammed and killed immediately. • Lysogenic cycle-viral cycle where the viral DNA is inactive for a time before reproduction. • Lysogenic cycle explains how viruses, like HIV, HSV, etc. can hide and not appear for some time. • Lytic cycle=common cold. Retroviruses • Don’t contain DNA, have RNA provirus in stead. • Problem: host has DNA, which can’t join w/ provirus. • Solution: inject an enzyme (reverse transcriptase) that can make DNA from the provirus to be inserted into host DNA.
