Cancer”- Mayo Clinic’s new
laser therapy
Informational video from YouTube
by Mayo Clinic
Presentation created by Andreas Tsingis
Throat Cancer and Santa Story
Mayo Clinic uses a “light” Santa story to introduce
the serious subject of throat cancer, as it happened
to an ordinary man
People of all ages and educational backgrounds
relate easier to a story like this and will be able to
understand better the purpose of this video
Throat Cancer
• Throat Cancer can happen to everyone
• Sometimes cancerous tumors cannot be easily
detected
• Many things, even everyday habits can affect the
diagnosis but also the therapy for throat cancer
Treatment and therapy so far
• Throat tumors are hard to reach and therefore:
 Treatment can be painful and difficult
 Surgery can be disfiguring
 Chemotherapy is very toxic
 Radiation can be harmful for other structures in the throat
New treatment method
Mayo Clinic has introduced a new method for treating
cancerous tumors of the throat and other similar
conditions
CO2 laser technology
CO2 Laser Technology
How does it work?
Light from the laser uses mirrors to bounce back
Doctors use a flexible fiber which is placed into the
mouth of the patient to get to the tumor
This flexible fiber consists of many mirrors that help
the light go to various and multiple directions
The light energy can get to hard-to-reach areas on
and around the tumor, even in corners
Benefits of the laser treatment
• New technology
• Provides an easier way for doctors to treat throat
cancer and other similar cancers
• Less painful treatment for the patient
• Provides the patient with an alternative therapy,
avoiding chemotherapy and radiation when possible
(when other organs are not affected by cancer)
Happy ending
• The patient of the Santa story managed to go
through a successful laser surgery
• He had to go through radiation because other organs
were affected by the throat cancer
• Recovery is gradual but “Santa’s” future is bright,
thanks to Mayo Clinic
Main points of this video
• The importance of early diagnosis and immediate
treatment
• There are various methods to treat throat cancer
• Recovery can be difficult depending on each case
• New technologies can make patients’ life easier
