32nd Conference on Environmental Information Processing Technologies (EIPT)
The conference, chaired by Scott Jacobs, NWS and Nazila Merati was held in New Orleans,
Louisiana from January 10-14 2016. EIPT convened 18 sessions covering a variety of topics
ranging from crowdsourcing weather observations to AWIPS updates. EIPT also held four
joint sessions with other conferences and participated in two themed joint sessions. On
January 12, EIPT was the lead conference on a moderated panel session on the topic of the
NOAA Big Data CRADA. Unidata’s Mohan Ramamurthy moderated the panel. Participants
included the NOAA Big Data Project Director, Amy Gaskins, William Gail from Global
Weather Corp., Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)’s George Percivall, Leanne Haselden
from IBM, Valliappa Lakshmanan from Climate Corporation and Maria Patterson
representing Open Science Data Cloud. The panel was well attended. We plan on furthering
this discussion at the 2017 meeting in Seattle with further panel discussions and
developing a Big Data session.
EIPT also participated in another panel, hosted by the Fourth Symposium on
Weather, Water and Climate Enterprise. The topic of this panel was “Making Climate
Information Available to Decision Makers: Challenges, Risks and Uncertainty”. Scott Jacobs
moderated the panel, which included Mari Tye, NCAR, Christopher Little, AER and Marjorie
McGuirk, CASE Consultants International.
Several student prizes were awarded during the meeting. Prizes were given for oral and
poster presentations. The prizes were awarded to Katie Bowden (University of Oklahoma,
1st), William Blumberg (University of Oklahoma, 2nd) and Tomer Burg (University of
Oklahoma, 3rd). The winners of the student poster competition are as follows – Alexander
Jacques, (University of Utah, 1st), Chris Bosma (Georgia Institute of Technology, 2nd) and
John Lake (University of Oklahoma, 3rd).
The 33rd Annual EIPT conference will be held on January 22-26, 2017 in Seattle,
Washington. Please contact Scott Jacobs ([email protected]) or Nazila Merati
