Dietary supplements are products that can be added to people’s diets. They include vitamins, minerals, herbs, and amino acids. DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than “conventional foods”. DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS A product cannot claim that it can "help you lose weight“ or "cure cancer“. By law, companies that make these products cannot claim they prevent, treat, or cure disease. UNDER THE DSHEA (DIETARY SUPPLEMENT HEALTH AND EDUCATION ACT OF 1994), THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THAT THE SUPPLEMENT IS SAFE BEFORE IT IS MARKETED. DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE APPROVED BY THE FDA (FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION) BEFORE MARKETING. THE FDA (FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION) IS RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING ACTION AGAINST UNSAFE PRODUCTS AFTER THEY ARE ON THE MARKET. THE FDA MONITORS SAFETY, PRODUCT INFORMATION (LABELING, CLAIMS, PRODUCT INSERTS AND LITERATURE) AFTER THE PRODUCT IS ON THE MARKET. THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION REGULATES ADVERTISING OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS.
