Nanotechnology is the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Nanotechnology deals with developing materials, devices, or other structures with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanotechnology is considered a key technology for the future. Development in Nanotechnology In 2010 IBM used a silicon tip measuring only a few nanometers at its apex (tip) to chisel away material from a substrate (the under layer) to create a complete nanoscale 3D relief map of the world oneone-thousandth (0.000001x) the size of a grain of salt (approx. 1mm) — in 2 minutes and 23 seconds. This activity demonstrated a powerful patterning methodology for generating nanoscale patterns and structures as small as 15 nanometers at greatly reduced cost and complexity, opening up new prospects for fields such as electronics, optoelectronics (comb. electronics and light), and medicine. Nanoscale Nanoscale items are items that are measurable using nanometers. Nanomaterials are in nanoscale, with at least one dimension that is only 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanometer Nanometer (nm) System: Metric Length: 1billionth of a meter (0.000000001m), 0.001 micrometer (mm), 0.0000001cm How does this benefit us? With nanotechnology, we can now find ways to save lives by finding new cures to different diseases. We can make drug delivery vehicles to deliver the exact amount of drug required to a specific organ so as to reduce side-effects of the drug. It can also be used to engineer tissues and regrow bones. It also allows us to make new materials with the properties we need, allowing us to manufacture new things as substitutes of natural items. Nanotechnology allows us to filter water and make it cleaner for us to use in our daily lives. They may be used to clean up nuclear waste, reduce energy consumption, improving manufacturing methods, or increase energy production. They are placed in foods so that it makes the food more healthy and nutritious. (Biotechnology: GM Foods) Impacts on the environment and ecosystem Positive 1. Potential nuclear waste cleaning agent. 2. Find medicine and pharmaceuticals to cure diseases in organisms. 3. Create new materials Negative 1. Potential health hazards if nanomaterials are exposed to organisms. 2. There is a large amount of nanopollution (waste product) which can be dangerous for its size because It can easily penetrate any animal and plant cell causing unknown effects.
