Welcome to QETA Newsletter 1 2016. Poverty is not the simple result of bad geography, bad culture, bad history. It's the result of us: of the ways that people choose to organize their societies. - Adam Davidson A finite world can support only a finite population; therefore, population growth must eventually equal zero. - Garrett Hardin Certainly, the poverty, the discrimination, the episodic unemployment could not but strike an inquiring youngster: why did these exist, and what could we do about them. - Joseph Stiglitz Early investment in the lives of disadvantaged children will help reduce inequality, in both the short and the long run. - James Heckman QETA 2016 CALENDAR OF EVENTS 28 February 7 March 7 March 8 March 9 March 10 March 10 March 31 March 11 April 14 May 11 July 21 July 22 July 25-29 July 25-29 July 12 September 3 October 12 October 2016 Subscription Due RBA Seminar 1 Cannon Hill Anglican College 11am RBA Seminar 2 Brisbane Girls Grammar School 4pm RBA Seminar 3 Toowoomba Grammar School 9am RBA Seminar 4 Gold Coast 9.30am - venue to be advised RBA Seminar 5 Cavendish Road State High School 7am RBA Seminar 6 Marist College Ashgrove 9.30am Final date for discounted memberships Econopak 1 Published QETA Conference – venue to be advised Econopak 2 Published UQ Student Day QUT Student Day UQ Student Economics Competition Economics Week UQ Student Economics Competition Presentation of Prizes Econopak 3 Published AGM QETA NEWS 1. 2016 MEMBERSHIP Your QETA membership can be renewed by logging onto the website, Go to “Join US” and then follow the instructions. FROM OXFAM Focus on climate change As the much anticipated COP21 began Tracy Carty outlined the state of climate emergency the world is facing and we published a briefing on the extent of global carbon inequality. Ruth Mhlanga then explained why what's good for the environment is good for the economy, and Katherine Trebeck asked: are some people consuming too much? With the agreement now reached Daniel Morchain reflects back on another event held in parallel, The Global Landscapes Forum, and discusses the importance of having local level stakeholders involved in these global events. 13. POPULATION MATTERS Anchored Minds has released a short film about the effects of overpopulation in Europe. The film explores the impact of population on climate change and quality of life, urging viewers to reconsider their choices and lead more sustainable lifestyles. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has released its annual report on the state of the world population, focusing on women’s rights. Amongst other points, the UNFPA noted that inadequate response to conflict and natural disaster accounts for the majority of infant and maternal deaths around the world. CBC News has published a list of the five most effective ways for individuals to help fight the effects of climate change. Amongst the suggestions listed are eating less red meat and using electrical appliances more sparingly Clauses acknowledging the importance of sustainable individual consumption have been added to the draft COP21 agreement. India, whose leaders proposed the clauses, had criticized the developed countries for adopting “extravagant” lifestyles that exacerbate climate change. Over half of Australians are against further population growth, according to a recent survey. More than half of the survey respondents said they believe their country is “full”, while two thirds believe Australia’s population should not exceed 30 million. It currently stands at 24 million and is rising rapidly. New measures implemented by the Chinese government to curb population growth in Shanghai have been effective, according to newly-released government data. The number of permanent residents surged from 16 million in 2000 to 24 million in 2014, but for 2015 – 2020 an increase of just 740,000 is forecast. 14. Why China's Market Fell So Much "The Shanghai market fell nearly 7 per cent yesterday on the first trading day of the year, its worst day since the height of last summer's market crash. The sell-off triggered circuit-breakers on their first day in effect, shutting down the market in the early afternoon." To find out why China's market fell and how this is affecting other countries read more HERE. A Wake Up Call for Big Businesses "In the opening months of this year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will be deploying a taskforce to contact large companies and government organisations seeking to examine their contracting practices. My guess is that most of Australia's top 500 companies and vast areas of the public service will have contracts in breach of the new unfair contracts act. They have until November 2016 to rewrite hundreds of thousands of 'unfair' contracts and change the way they do business in large areas of their operation." Click HERE to read more.
