Quantitative information on manpower, production, distribution, transport, foreign trade, prices, employment and earnings, investments etc are examples of economic Statistics. 5/23/2017 2:24:41 AM Page 3 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T. ► Economic Survey in Pre-NISE Era: The first ever Industrial Survey in Nigeria was conducted by the Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) now National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in 1963, in respect of 1962 activities. It was first started as a pilot scheme following the United Nations Statistical Office (UNSO) appeal to member nations to participate in a world census of Industrial establishments. The survey covered establishments engaging ten (10) or more persons. The next manufacturing survey closely following this was the quarterly establishment surveys of industrial production in 1968. The survey of Distributive Trade and Services started in 1971 as a pilot survey and subsequent surveys were conducted in 1972 and 1973. 5/23/2017 2:24:41 AM Page 4 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T. ► The collection of Motor Vehicles statistics started in 1958 with data on the number, type brand, re-registration etc of motor vehicles in the country. ► The survey of Construction started in 1973 by FOS now NBS in conjunction with Construction Establishments in 1976. ► The Survey of Mining and Quarrying started as a joint undertaking by FOS now NBS and the then Ministry of Mines and Power. The Ministry of Mines and Power, (Mines division) Undertook the fieldwork while NBS carried out the analysis. 5/23/2017 2:24:41 AM Page 5 INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T. ► Economic Survey in National Integrated Survey of Establishment (NISE) Era: In NISE era, all surveys are conducted under NBS National Integrated Survey of Establishments (NISE) programme. Other modules in the collaboration are: NISH (National Integrated Survey of Household) and SAS (System of Administrative Statistics). 5/23/2017 2:24:41 AM Page10 OBJECTIVES The overall objective of manufacturing statistics is to: Collect relevant Statistics to facilitate the production of GDP and monitoring economic performance of the country. Produce data to aid economic analysis Produce State, Local Government Finance Statistics Collect current socio-economic Statistics in Nigeria to aid monitoring and evaluation of various government programmes (NEEDS, SEEDS, MDG and 7-Point Agenda of the Federal Government) at national and sub-national levels.
