INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND
► Economic Statistics can be defined as an historical
record of economic activity which is capable of
guiding the understanding of an economic system
and at the same time guiding the formation of
policy outside that system. Quantitative information
on manpower, production, distribution, transport,
foreign trade, prices, employment and earnings,
investments etc are examples of economic
Statistics.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND CON’T.
► Economic Survey in Pre-NISE Era:
 The first ever Industrial Survey in Nigeria was conducted by the
Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) now National Bureau of
Statistics (NBS) in 1963, in respect of 1962 activities. It was first
started as a pilot scheme following the United Nations Statistical
Office (UNSO) appeal to member nations to participate in a
world census of Industrial establishments. The survey covered
establishments engaging ten (10) or more persons.
 The next manufacturing survey closely following this was the quarterly
establishment surveys of industrial production in 1968.
 The survey of Distributive Trade and Services started in 1971 as a pilot
survey and subsequent surveys were conducted in 1972 and 1973.

► The collection of Motor Vehicles statistics started in 1958 with data
on the number, type brand, re-registration etc of motor vehicles in
the country.
► The survey of Construction started in 1973 by FOS now NBS in
conjunction with Construction Establishments in 1976.
► The Survey of Mining and Quarrying started as a joint undertaking
by FOS now NBS and the then Ministry of Mines and Power. The
Ministry of Mines and Power, (Mines division) Undertook the
fieldwork while NBS carried out the analysis.

► Economic Survey in National Integrated Survey of
Establishment (NISE) Era:
 In NISE era, all surveys are conducted under NBS
National Integrated Survey of Establishments
(NISE) programme. The planning and execution of
these surveys are entirely NBS affairs.
 The common feature is the FRAME in all the
sectors

CHALLENGES IN THE PRODUCTION
OF MANUFACTURING STATISTICS
♠ Inadequate resources
♠ Inadequate frame despite its continuous
updating because of frequent birth and deaths of
Establishments
♠ Apathy on the part of the respondents which may
be due to inadequate statistical awareness
5/23/2017 2:24:41 AM
Page30
CHALLENGES IN THE PRODUCTION
OF MANUFACTURING STATISTICS
♠ Difficulty in locating the establishment through
improper description of physical location
♠ Lack of feedback from users which is needed for
improving subsequent reports
♠ Network connectivity
♠ Robotic storage
