Djibouti Government • • • Djibouti's government is a republic. Djibouti gained its independence on June 27th, 1977 from France. The chief of state is president Ismail GUELLEH. (Since May 8th, 1999) President Ismail GUELLEH Government Part 2 • • • The government has three branches, similar to the our Country's government. The first branch is the executive.The president is in this branch. The second branch is the legislative. The prime minister, the cabinet, and the 65 member parliament. Government Part 3 • • The third is the judicial. The judicial branch is based on the French civil law system, traditional practices, and Islamic law. The suffrage age is universal 18. • • • Economy Djibouti's GDP (PPP) is $2600. The unemployment rate in Djibouti is 59%. Djibouti's major imports are beverages, foods, transportation equipment, chemicals, petroleum products. Economy Part 2 • Djibouti's top import partners South Arabia 18.2%, Ethiopia 10.5%, US 9.3%, France 8.6%, China 8.3%, Netherlands 4.2%. Economy Part 3 • • The major exports in Djibouti are re exports, hides and skins, coffee. The top export partners are Somalia 61.9%, Yemen 21.9%, Pakistan 5.2%, Ethiopia 4.5%. Climate • Djibouti has 2 main seasons. May to September is the dry season. • Daytime temperatures average over 100o fahrenheit and often exceed 120o fahrenheit. Climate Part 2 • • • Some days may be occupied by hot sandy winds. October through April are the cooler seasons. Temperatures in the low 80's. Lake Assal Climate Part 3 • • • Based on the climate living in Djibouti is hard. With the scorching temperatures water is scarce. That is why Djibouti has a severe water shortage. Djibouti is located in east Africa or the horn of Africa. Flag •The Blue stands for the sea and the sky, green is for the earth and white is for peace. Green and blue are also the colors of the two main population groups, the Afars and Issas. The red star recalls the struggle for independence and is a symbol of unity. • $1=177 Djibouti Franc. • The currency code is DJF Currency Food • • • Much of the food in Djibouti is imported due to lack of suitable agricultural land. One of the most popular foods in Djibouti is the Soupe djiboutienne. It contains goat meat,potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, garlic, green chili pepper, finely onions, salt and black pepper. • Soupe djiboutienne. Religion • • • The religion in Djibouti is mostly muslim and a very small percentage of christian. The president is required to take a religious oath at inauguration. Other government employees are also required to do so.
