Tropical Rainforest Red eyed tree frog There are many types of amphibians in a tropical rainforest. One of these is the Red Eyed Tree Frog. The Red Eyed Tree Frog eats insects and sometimes other small frogs, but their favorite is crickets. The predators of the tree frog are snakes, bats and large birds. They are originally from Costa Rica but are now in many rain forests. People think that the red eyes are to startle predators. Toucan One of the birds in the tropical rainforest is the toco toucans. These are the largest type of toucan. The Toco's main predators are humans, large cats, and the worst enemy is the jaguar. they eat fruit, bird eggs, insects, rodents, lizards, and other smaller birds. the toco is a very noisy animal they can be heard a half a mile away. they are found mainly in South America. Poison Dart Frog • Another example of the amphibious inhabitants of the tropical rainforest are poison dart frogs. Also known as poison arrow frogs these small frogs come in various colors. The colors warn predators that they are poisonous. They eat mostly beetles and other insects. They live in Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela and Hawaii islands. Margay • One of the rainforest's smallest cats is the margay. The margay is a tree cat that very rarely is on the ground. They eat birds, insects, reptiles, and other small tree animals. The predators of the margay are larger carnivores and birds of prey. They are found mainly in Central and south America. The margay is only about 2 feet tall at the shoulder. Forest Elephant • Although most people think about elephants in the desert in Africa. There is also Forest elephants. The Forest elephants are much like African and Asian Elephants the biggest difference is where they live. Almost the only predators of the forest elephants are humans. the elephants eat grass, leaves, and fruit. They are found in West and Central Africa. On their front feet they have five toes on their back feet they only have four. Climate • Only rain forest near equator are warm year long. Subtropical forests have year long changes. There are a couple of types of rainforest and they are categorized by the seasonal changes name: Monsoon, equatorial, subtropical Rainfall • Very wet environment total rain fall: 1500-2500 mm. No dry season. Rain falls nearly everyday. It is usually 64F69F everyday. At night it drops between 52F-59F. There is little difference between warm and cold months. Relative humidity is very high. The type of climate is called Equatorial. The result of the rain fills the rainforest with lust green plants. Many trees have canopies providing shade for animals and plants the canopies help the little plants and animals on the forest floor from the blistering sun. The forest floor is very shady and cool. The best time to visit the rain forest is in their winter which is June 22September 21. Cool Breeze • There is an air flow that's comes to the equator which causes moisture in the air. That causes 24 hours of continuous rainfall. There are a few dry months, but if you would visit there it would still seem wet. There is about 15 feet of rainfall each year. They receive about 12 hours of sunlight each day. Since all the sunlight makes photosynthesis it keeps energy into the forest. Which makes plants stronger which gives food to the animals. So climate isn't just rain. plants bougainvillea • the bougainvillea grows in the biome of the Amazon rainforest in South America. this bueatiful plant can grow to be up to 30 feet It can either be vines, trees, or shrubs with sharp thorns. the leaves of the bougainvillea are heart shaped with droppy tips. bougainvilleas dont like swampy areas because it dosent have a lot of soil drainage. it can live with a lot of waterbut it dosent like to hold the water for long. The strangler fig tree • strangler figs are one of the most important plant speices in the rainforest ecosystem. there are around 1,000 different species of ficus, which can be found in every major tropical and rainforest. Many many animals such as parrots pigeons gibbons monkeys horn bills toucans and fruit eating bats eat the sweet figs from these trees. Because they are so important to the animals of the tropical rainforest figs are considered a “keystone” species. There is a constant supply of fruit for the animals because different types of figs give fruit at various times of the year. In some areas up to 70% of the animals us figs for the main part of their diet. Strangler figs can grow to be 148 feet tall. They make up some of the tropical canopy. They actually grow in a fig tree and when their roots reach the ground the cut off the other tree’s nutrients, or strangle it. Then it grows lots of thick
