This green fruit has been growing on tall plants for about twelve months. © Simon Rawles The farmer is picking big bunches of the fruit. What fruit is it? She’s checking to see if the berries on these plants are ready to pick. © Simon Rawles The seeds inside the berries – called beans – will be washed, dried, sorted, roasted, ground, and then packaged. This woman works in Mali. She’s filling a basket with white fibres that grow around the seeds of these plants. © Simon Rawles The fibres will be spun into thread, which is used to make cloth. Lots of your clothes, sheets and towels at home are probably made out of this material. He’s picking the leaves from these long rows of plants. You can put these leaves – often inside little bags – into hot water to make a very popular drink. Some people have it with milk and sugar. The plants can measure up to six metres! The man is cutting down the stalks. These stalks, or canes, will be washed, chopped, shredded, mixed with water and crushed to release a juice. This man works in Venezuela. He’s picking fruit from one of the cacao trees on his farm. Then he’ll open the pods and take out the beans inside. This man is working up a tree in Sri Lanka! He’s climbing this palm tree to reach the fruit at the top of it. Palm trees can sometimes grow to be over 20 metres tall. Some of the foods that we can buy in shops and supermarkets are made with wheat. She’s working in a field called a ‘paddy field’.
