Occur?

Stared in the late 1600’s
– Due to European demand for beaver
hats

Ended in the mid 1800’s
– Due to the end of fashion craze

System of Bartering
– Native hunters would trade with
European Companies:
Natives – Beaver skins
 Europeans – cloth, hatchets, guns, kettles,
beads, needles, etc.


From 1550 to 1850
– felt hats were fashionable in Europe
By late 1500’s beavers were extinct in
Western Europe
– Also close to extinction in Scandinavia
and Russia
North America became new source for
fashion trade
The Beaver

Young are called kits
– Born with full fur, open eyes, and ability to
swim

Herbivores
– Eat bark, leaves, woody vines, grass, shrubs,
pond plants, and lily pads
– Store food underwater during winter

Live in family groups
– In ponds, rivers, and small lakes with muddy
bottoms
– monogamous
