What is the
Troposphere?
Earths atmosphere consists
of 5 layers.
The troposphere is the layer
closest to Earths surface.
All weather occurs in the
troposphere.
What is the difference
between Weather and
Climate?
Weather is what is happening
daily in the troposphere.
Weather changes minute to
minute, day to day.
Climate is the average
temperature and precipitation of
a given area over time.
What are the four
conditions that
influence the weather?
Temperature
Wind
Precipitation
Air Pressure
Who predicts the
weather?
Meterologist
What does a barometer
measure?
Air Pressure
What does a wind vane
tell us?
The direction of the wind.
What is humidity?
The amount of water vapor in
the air.
What is insolation?
The solar energy that
reaches our planet.
 Insolation does not warm all
places on Earth equally.
One reason for the
difference in temperature is
Earth’s shape.
Gulf Stream
The Gulf Stream carries warm
water from the equator to
the poles.
What does an
anemometer measure?
Wind speed
Information from
Weather Maps:

Low Pressure Systems
Stormy
Precipitation
Cloudy
Warm
Light Air-Humidity
High Pressure Air
Dry
Cold
Sunny
Heavy Air-Dense
Fronts
A front marks the front edge
of a two air masses.
 Air masses can be either
warm of cold.
Global Winds
Global winds blow steadily
over long distances in a
predictable direction.
Which direction do Global
Winds blow where we live
(30˚N-60˚N)?
West to East
Prevailing Westerlies
Air Mass
A large region of air that has
a similar temperature and
humidity.
Air Pressure
The force put on a given
area by the weight of the air
above it.
As temperature
increases….
Air pressure decreases
