Forces
 Force—a push or
pull that one body
exerts on another
– Every push, pull,
stretch, or bend
results in a force
being applied.
Balanced Forces
 Net Force—when 2 or more
forces act on an object at
the same time
 The object does not move if
the forces cancel each
other out.
 Balanced Forces—forces on
an object that are equal in
size and opposite in
direction.
Unbalanced Forces
 Unbalanced Forces—The size and
direction of forces acting on an object
are unequal.
Balanced & Unbalanced Forces
Inertia
 Inertia—the tendency of an object to
resist a change in its motion
 The greater the mass, the greater its
inertia.
 Vector (arrow) that shows magnitude and
direction of a force.

Law of Motion
 The Law of Inertia:
– an object moving at a constant velocity
keeps moving at that velocity unless a net
force acts on it.
– an object at rest stays at rest unless a net
force acts on it.
