The mission's purpose was to search for a Northwest passage across North America to Asia (a seaway to Asia). Vasco Nunez de Balboa led an expedition across Central America and discovered the Pacific Ocean. Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to circumnavigate the world. Francisco Pizarro and his forces conquered the Inca Empire along the western coast of South America. Hernando Cortes conquered the Aztec in Mexico.
