Key Customer Challenges
• Maintain or improve service levels
• Expensive to maintain multiple copies of
databases
• Costly to replicate for backup, test and
development
• Unreliable and expensive recovery
• Unnecessary disk/tape required for daily
full backups
EMC CONFIDENTIAL – INTERNAL AND PARTNER USE ONLY
2
Key Advantages of BRS Solution
• Scalability to consolidate backup for database dumps
• Efficient backups in Test/Dev Environments
• Deduplication of database backups to make daily full
backups possible
• Enables network-efficient replication and cost effective
recovery
• Leverages 3rd Party and/or EMC Backup Solutions

With Data Domain Deduplication
Storage Systems, You Can…
Retain longer
Keep backups onsite longer with less
disk for fast, reliable restores, and
eliminate the use of tape for
operational recovery
Replicate smarter
WAN
Move only deduplicated data over
existing networks with up to 99%
bandwidth efficiency for cost-effective
disaster recovery
Recover reliably
Continuous fault detection and selfhealing ensure data recoverability to
meet service level agreements

Background
Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN)
• Oracle’s native database backup and recovery tool.
• RMAN engine embedded in Oracle Database enabling all key backup
and recovery functions
• Provides advanced features such as block corruption detection, unused
block compression, block change tracking and undo optimization
• RMAN uses multiple channels for backup efficiency
–
Multiplexing and parallelising
• RMAN backup formats:
– Backup sets (RMAN specific format)
– Image copies
• Direct to disk and integration to 3rd party backup applications
• Full, incremental, and incrementally updated (merge) backups.
– Block change tracking for incremental and incrementally updated

DD Boost Software
 Distributes parts of deduplication process to
backup server or application clients
 Speeds backups by up to 50 percent
DD
Boost
 Enables more efficient resource utilization
 Provides application control of Data Domain
replication process
 Ensures inline verification of data by generating
checksums on the server before data is sent to
the Data Domain system
 Supports majority of backup software market
and native utilities in industry leading
databases
– EMC Avamar and NetWorker
– Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec
– EMC Greenplum and Oracle RMAN

SQL Server Backup Details
• SQL Server lacks a centralized backup catalog like RMAN catalog. Also
no equivalent of Oracle Enterprise Manager, a centralized utility.
• A GUI utility available within Management Studio called Maintenance
Plan automates creation and scheduling of SQL Server backup jobs on
one server. A maintenance plan ensures that all databases within an
instance get backed up, and also that older backups get deleted.
• SQL Server modules from backup software like Networker and Avamar
centralize scheduling and ensure that all databases within an instance
get backed up.

SQL Server and other databases
Data Domain Use Cases
 Native Backups
– DBA staff controls all database backup and recovery
▪ Excellent fit for DBA teams already using this strategy
▪ Removes dependency on the “Backup team”
– Data Domain system presented as NFS/CIFS
▪ Eliminates license and maintenance fees for 3rd party
modules
 Backup Application Agents
– Data Domain system deployed as target backup
device
– Better backup performance with DD Boost enabled
backup applications:
▪ Distributed segment processing reduces data transfer
requirements

Backup
Software
No RMAN disk functionality like incremental merge. Large
licensing fees per client or by capacity. DBAs can’t fully control
DB backup.
IBM, Exagrid, Backup
HP, Quantum, Hardware
SunZFS
No DD Boost, no Data Invulnerability Architecture, inline
deduplication or flexible replication options. VTL-only systems
cannot serve as a target for database dump utilities. (NOTE:
SunZFS has inline dedupe)

Snapshots recovery within minutes or hours. They are not backups. They
rely heavily on underlying hardware and are weak against
cascading hardware or software failures.

disk/tape
Do not deliver storage reduction benefits that deduplication
provides. Tape and disk growth directly tied to the growth of frontend primary storage. Results in increased power, cooling, floor
space and vaulting costs.

Having the Database Discussion
Current Solution
Tape or disk for
backup, test
and dev
Pain Points
• Expensive to maintain multiple copies of databases
• Costly to replicate for backup, test and dev
• Unreliable and expensive recovery
• A lot of disk/tape required for needed daily full backups
EMC Solution
Data Domain
deduplication
storage systems
Benefits
• Data Domain systems provide up to 28.5 PB logical capacity
for consolidated backup and test/dev database dumps
• Shrinks database backups to make daily fulls possible
• Enables network-efficient replication and cost effective
recovery
Positioning
Who: > 500 GB of databases, distributed enterprises offer
best ROI; Database Administrators (DBAs)
How: Consolidate backup, test and dev on a single system
