Protein: The DRI recommendation was 56 grams, and this diet provided well over 100 grams in a day. Fat: The DRI value for fat should be between 20-35 % of calories eaten. If you follow the diet, you get about 33 % of your calories from fat. Carbs: The grapefruit diet did meet the recommendation for carbs as well. On this diet, you are able to get 3-6 servings of carbs a day, which equaled to 140g. This allowed for the diet to meet the recommendation of 130 grams. Vitamins: The grapefruit diet does meet the DRI recommendations for most Vitamins. Did not meet DRI for : Folate, Vitamin E, and K. Minerals: It met the DRI recommendation for most minerals. Fell under for: Iron, Magnesium, and Calcium, which is a red flag. Meals • For breakfast, you are supposed to eat: 2 eggs boiled, 2 slices of bacon, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar. • For lunch you are supposed to eat: ½ grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without sugar, a salad, any style meat in any amount. • For dinner you are supposed to eat: 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar, a salad with or a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices, meat or Fish cooked any way, and a cup of coffee or tea. • Lastly for a bedtime snack you are supposed to have an 8 oz. cup of skim milk. Benefits Risk • The grapefruit diet is low in calories, full of vitamin C, and contains beta-carotene • It can help protect against infection • The white pith contains pectin and bioflavonoids which makes grapefruits an excellent antioxidant food • Reduce risk of diabetes • Enzymes in grapefruit help to reduce insulin levels and weight loss • The amount of caffeinated beverages one has to drink can cause dehydration • The diet is deficient in fiber, protein and several important vitamins and minerals • The diet can cause you to feel dizziness or low energy levels throughout the diet. • No variety • It also lacks in iron and calcium. • The grapefruit diet is strictly short-term. In most cases, the weight you lose is regained. Recommended? • I do not recommend this diet. • It requires you to cut out certain foods, and it is lacking some of the vitamins and minerals you need to function. • Despite this version of the diet incorporating more calories, it is still closer to the short end of being ok. The worst part of this diet is that it is a shortterm diet, so once you go back to eating regular after the 12 days, you gain all of the weight back anyway.
