Megaplex-2100H Module MVG Voice over IP Gateway/Gatekeeper Module • Proprietary RTP multiplexing • • • • FEATURES • Voice over IP Gateway/Gatekeeper module for Megaplex-2100H/2104H systems • Suitable for both phone-to-phone or PC-to-phone applications • Fully compatible with the following H.323v3 standards: ! H.225.0 (RAS, Q.931, RTP, RTCP) ! H.245 • Integral gateway enables standard compressed voice over IP (VoIP) applications • • • transmits voice packets using less bandwidth and causing less congestion (providing up to 1:16 compression) Supports Group III fax relay over IP Supports DTMF relay over a separate reliable channel for undistorted signaling Gateway supports both Auto Connect for direct dialing “hot-line” applications and Voice Switching for PBX-like call switching Integral VoIP gatekeeper for H.323 compliant call control and registration functions Gatekeeper supports multiple zones Gatekeeper supports both Direct and Routed modes for call setup SNMP agent supporting VoIP (H.341) for standard Network Management Systems DESCRIPTION • The MVG module provides both the gateway and gatekeeper functionality required for Voice over IP (VoIP) applications. Operating in the Megaplex-2100H/2104H systems, MVG enables transmitting compressed voice/fax traffic over IP networks. • The MVG module incorporates an integral gateway component. The gateway receives compressed voice frames from residing voice modules (digital interface MVC-8/E1, MVC-8/T1 or analog interface MVC-4N, MVC-8N), and transfers them over IP networks using the H.323 protocol. • The MVG’s integral gatekeeper component is applied to translate a call alias (phone number) to an IP address. It provides the call registration, setup and control functions, as well as the IP address assignment and resolution functions required for the VoIP applications. • MVG includes an SNMP agent that supports VoIP. The agent’s MIB (Management Information Base) is compliant with the H.341 standard. The SNMP agent enables managing the MVG (including configuration and performance monitoring) via the RADview Network Management System as part of the Megaplex-2100H application. Alternatively, MVG can be managed by any MIB browser as an SNMP agent. Megaplex-2100H Module MVG Voice over IP Gateway/Gatekeeper Module GATEWAY • Conventional voice transmission over IP methods can be wasteful in terms of bandwidth and congestion. Transmission of individual calls in short packets, each with its own header, increase bandwidth demands. In addition, the resultant high number of short packets cause greater network congestion, with packets constantly interrupting the transmission of other packets. • MVG provides an integral VoIP separate reliable channel for undistorted signaling. The DTMF (tone) signaling commonly used for automated telephone answering/information systems is sensitive, and if slightly distorted by compression/decompression, may not function properly. To avoid this, the DTMF signaling is separated from the compressed voice data and transmitted on a different reliable channel. gatekeeper for H.323 compliant call control and registration functions. The gatekeeper technology provides enhanced functionality for multiple zone support, multiple gateway operation and resource usage control. • The MVG gatekeeper supports both Direct and Routed modes for the call setup process. The Direct mode allows the end points to perform the call setup process, without the mediation of the gatekeeper. In this mode, the gatekeeper only provides address resolution information for the routing information needed by the call originator to reach the destination. In the Routed mode, the gatekeeper performs the entire call setup process (Q.931 session). This latter mode provides better security. • Group III Fax Relay over IP is MVG uses RAD’s proprietary RTP multiplexing method to combine voice packets from several calls into one long packet with a single header. RTP multiplexing decreases the total bandwidth requirement for the voice traffic, while also reducing delays in the routers and dropped packets when queues overflow. The RTP multiplexing is especially beneficial in aplications with high number of calls. • MVG’s gateway provides a GATEKEEPER • MVG enables DTMF relay over a supported by MVG, with standard fax rates between 2.4 and 14.4 kbps. • Both Auto Connect for direct compressed voice system (CVSoIP) application, that enables point-to-point transmission of compressed voice calls over IP (providing a compression rate up to 16:1). It uses RTP multiplexing by opening a voice stream between a pair of gateways. RTP multiplexing can also be employed in multipoint applications. dialing “hot-line” applications and Voice Switching for PBX-like call switching are supported. With Auto Connect, the user on the local Megaplex-2100H side picks up the phone while the pre-configured phone on the remote Megaplex-2100H side rings automatically. Voice Switching enables the Megaplex-2100H to provide PBX-like call switching where dialing an internal extension number is enough to reach a phone located at a remote location. For supporting international calls, MVG can handle telephone numbers as long as 24 digits.
