M ODULAR APPLICATION OF TELEMONITORING FOR THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR BASED ON W IRELESS S ENSOR N ETWORKS Pedro Santos Moreira Dissertation developed under de supervision of Prof. Gil Gonçalves e do Eng. Marco Alves at Freedomgrow 1. Motivation Tourism is one of the fastest sectors growing in the world, a phenomenon that is fomented by globalization and increased world communications level .This sector has been fundamental to the countries that have tourism potential, like Portugal, which is highly recognized for its beaches, cuisine and cultural and patrimonial heritage. [1] With the entry into force of low cost airlines, the number of tourists arriving in Portugal is increased. These arrivals stirred positively with all the hospitality market. Example is the significant growth of hotel units in Porto, from luxury hotels to hostels. [2] The Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) was born in military applications, a common start for some of the technologies we know today. These networks are composed of a potentially large number of intelligent sensor nodes with a processing core. The applications of sensor networks are used for civil use areas, including environmental monitoring, monitoring of buildings, industrial,or even health. [3] The FreedomGrow is owner of a Framework named PlugSense, whose function is to expedite the creation of process-based WSN applications. This process simplifies the implementation and management of the WSN allowing the programmer to focus only on application requirements and not to overcome the difficulties in their development. Applications developed on the application created by the Framework, are vertical applications that can be applied in various fields like agriculture, healthcare, hospitality and more. The aim of the project is to develop an application that is able to reduce installation costs, network and storage space of the video surveillance system. The most effective way to reduce the bandwidth consumed by these devices is reduce the amount of information transmitted which in this case is to reduce the number of images transmitted. To do this, will be used information from other sensors that consume less bandwidth, to decide when to transmit images. Besides the reduction of bandwidth, it is intended to improve the quality of information transmitted by the sensors of video surveillance, ie, it is intended to reduce / eliminate unnecessary areas and focus the image on what is really important. 3. Once the project has been partially developed, was given a primary focus in the video surveillance system. In this system the goal was to reduce the bandwidth and storage space needed for the system operation and to improve the quality of the stored information. In this document, it follows four subsections describing the developed work, that comprises the developed modules and the tests that was made. 3.1. 2. Objectivos The FreedomGrow decided to invest in low-cost tourism, because this is a growing niche market. The challenge is to create a low-cost aggregating application of monitoring systems critical for hotel service,of high value added and satisfying the most stringent quality standards in order to obtain all the information collected by the various systems of monitoring in a single platform accessible by any device fixed or mobile, to implement in small hotels and hostels. Considering that all sensors used for monitoring of the hotel are wireless sensors and sensors for video surveillance systems and that these require a large bandwidth becomes extremely important to have a robust and reliable network connection. Work description Solution Architecture In Figure 1 is shown the general scheme of the architecture. The sensors collect data environments who are watching and send them to the server that performs the sensory fusion. Every time that the server receives a value outside the stipulated limits (higher, lower), ie an alert, it sends a command to the video surveillance sensor to start recording. The surveillance sensor when receives the command starts sending images (the recording) to the server, who in turn sends it to the user when requested. This way it is intended to achieve a reduction in recording time and storage space of the video surveillance system thus achieving the main goal, an optimization of bandwidth without affecting the proper functioning of all the system want a reliable but low cost installation and management systems, we decided to create a system that transmits information only when it really is important, ie only when there is some kind of activity thus reducing a huge amount of information transmitted / stored. For this system it was necessary to perform an interconnection of multiple sensors with video surveillance, ie, whenever any of the installed sensors detect out limits (higher and lower), which in this case are called alerts, it sends a signal for the camera and it starts transmitting / recording. 3.4. Fig. 1 – Physical Architecture of the Solution 3.2. Optimizing the Quality of Information. When the cameras of video surveillance system are installed, these have a ”viewing area”on a particular compartment. Most often, these are transmitting images without relevant information, such as areas without activity and walls. After discussion with the supervisor of the Freedomgrow, it was decided to create the following features: • Create a home position for each camera; • Creating a positioning system for each sensor on relative the camera to which it is associated. 3.2.1. Home Position Using the features of the cameras implemented in the application, it was created a functionality to set a home position for each camera. With this feature the administrator, through the interface developed has the option to set the home position of a simple and intuitive way using a joystick system created to handle the camera, thus allowing to eliminate unnecessary areas. 3.2.2. Sensorial Positioning System As seen before, the application will only record images when some sensory activity is detected outside the established limits and that’s when the sensorial positioning system is applied. In the system each sensor has a relative position to the camera which it is associated. When the camera receives the alert information will rotate to the position of the sensor and start recording. 3.3. Optimizing Bandwidth Knowing that most video surveillance systems are systems that are transmitting / storing information 24 hours a day, and that they require large requirements such as bandwidth and storage space, and taking into account that the owners of small and medium hotels Tests Since there is no possibility of testing the application in a real scenario, the tests were conducted at the premises of FreedomGrow.A scenario was created with two distinct rooms. First tests with the initial solution and then with the implemented solution, which withdrew the values of bandwidth and storage space for each case were performed. After the analysis of the tests, there were significant results for both variables. As the bandwidth could be reduced around 80%in relation to the storage space could be reduced in the order of 87%. 4. Conclusions Finally, in view of the problem and the explicit requirements, it is thought that the proposed solution will help reduce costs because the solution to the constraints caused the network connection of the hotels will be minimized or even eliminated. This way, achieves a saving in the consumption of bandwidth, which is very valuable for the system to work in the hotel’s own network connection without installing a dedicated network for this solution.
