Cisco’s Ottawa R&D team
delivers global core routing innovation
Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, and also a corporate leader in
Ottawa’s technology community
Today, networks are an essential part of
business, education, government and home
communication. Cisco Systems Inc.’s networking
solutions are the foundation of these networks.
Cisco has shaped the future of the Internet by
creating unprecedented value and opportunity
for its customers, partners, shareholders and
employees and has become a worldwide leader
in networking — transforming how people
connect, communicate and collaborate.
Cisco’s strategy is based on catching the market transitions that
affect its customers. With the proliferation of video and collaborative Web 2.0 technologies, the network continues to evolve
from the plumbing of the internet — providing connectivity — to
the platform that will change the way people work, live, play
and learn. Cisco is truly dedicated to its customers — creating
long-lasting customer partnerships and working with customers
to identify needs and provide solutions that support success.
Cisco Canada has 1,200 employees, working across the country,
focused on sales, marketing and product development. Cisco’s
Ottawa Research and Development Centre is home to approximately 250 employees that focus on hardware development,
software development, ASIC development, product test and verification, and product marketing.
In 2011, Cisco and the Province of Ontario announced a massive
investment in research and development facilities. The deal,
which will create 300 jobs in Ottawa and Toronto, includes a
Cisco investment of $455 million over the next five years, while
the province chips in an additional $25 million.

Committed to giving back, Cisco is the largest corporate sponsor
of the Ottawa Food Bank, having donated over 1 million dollars
to the organization. Cisco continues its support of the food bank
year round through employee volunteerism and donations. In its

annual golf tournament. Cisco has also been a long time sponsor
of Ottawa’s Bluesfest.
Business advantage
Cisco’s ASR1000, ASR9000 and CRS-3 routers have defined
Cisco as an innovative leader in the core routing and
switching portfolio.
The CRS-3 offers more than 12 times the traffic capacity of the
nearest competing system.
The ASR 9000 System is designed to meet the bandwidth challenges of the future. It has 96 Tbps of total capacity, Cisco IOS®
XR Software for continuous operation, integrated advanced
video services content delivery system and Cisco network
virtualization technology. With the CRS-3 at the core of the
network and the ASR 9000 System on its edge, operators and
data centers will have all the capacity they need to serve
tomorrow’s internet. Together, the pair will be able to support
The Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers delivers
integrated, high-performance services, including multi-gigabite encryption, broadband, 40 Gbps firewall, Network-based
Application Recognition (NBAR), Flexible Packet Matching (FPM),
WAN optimization, and Cisco Session Border Controller. This
system offers enterprise and service providers industry-leading
performance, service capabilities, reliability, and efficiencies
in a compact form. Using the innovative Cisco QuantumFlow
Processor, the ASR 1000 enables users to activate current and
future services instantly to operate at line rate without compromising network performance or availability.
Future growth plans
Cisco spends nearly $5.2 billion a year in research and development, making it one of the top R&D companies in the world.
When looking at R&D as a percentage of revenue, Cisco matches
or exceeds industry peers, demonstrating the company’s
commitment to innovation.
A differentiator for Cisco is its internal innovation, acquisition strategy and partner approach. The ability to innovate is
currently the harbinger of success and sustainability for the
modern corporation. Of all of the companies on the Fortune 500
in 1965, only 19 per cent remain on this prestigious list today.
Companies that successfully innovated and reinvented themselves, like Cisco, remain. Cisco’s acquisition strategy is the
best in the world and it particularly looks for acquisitions that
capitalize on market disruption through new technologies and
new business models.
