Parking is available in the Duke Medicine Circle parking garage
located at 302 Trent Drive for $1 per hour or $6 for the entire day
(fees subject to change). A book of 10 daily parking passes is
available for $25 (fee subject to change) in the Shoppe located on
Level 0 of the Cancer Center. Handicapped parking is available in
the garage. A patient shuttle is located just outside the garage to
provide free rides for you and your family to the main entrance of
the Duke Cancer Center.
Valet parking is available at the main entrance of the Duke Cancer
Center for $7 (fees subject to change). You will be greeted at your
car and receive a claim check for your vehicle, and your car will be
parked in the parking garage.
Wheelchairs and assistance are available in the Duke Cancer Center.
We suggest that you allow ample time to get to your appointment
in addition to your travel time to Durham. This will allow you
enough time to locate the clinic, park, get to the clinic, and register.

The new Duke Cancer Center is designed to provide you and your
family a welcoming, supportive, and healing environment.
Improving your experience
Registration
You may register online or with one of our patient service
associates at your first appointment of the day. Patient pagers
provide additional privacy and allow you to visit other areas of
the building until you are paged for your appointment.
Waiting areas
Clinics have a spacious, comfortable waiting area with large
windows for natural light. Patient resources are located in waiting
areas, and volunteers serve refreshments and snacks to you and
your family.
Team-based, disease-specific care
The new facility brings together in one convenient location
the many aspects of your care. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists,
social workers, dieticians, and others will work together within
a multidisciplinary disease-based program to provide you with
all of your care needs.
Spaces for you and your family
Café
Quiet Room
The café offers indoor and outdoor seating, a
healthy menu with fruits and vegetables from
local farmers, and cooking demonstrations.
The Quiet Room offers a calming space for
personal reflection and relaxation programs.
Resource Center
Educational materials, computer kiosks, and a
skills lab for patient and family consultation are
available at the Resource Center.
Retail pharmacy
The Duke Cancer Center Specialty Pharmacy
offers a convenient location to get your
prescriptions filled and is open Monday – Friday
8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Shoppe
Private spaces for self-image consultations,
including selecting wigs, hats, turbans, and
post-surgical garments are available at Shoppe.
Garden
The garden is a beautiful outdoor space with
seating in front of the building.

Insurance cards
We will process claims for your services with your insurance
carriers. You may be asked to pay amounts not covered by your
insurance such as co-pays, deductibles, and coinsurance at the
time of your visit.
Required lab tests or imaging studies may increase the length
of your visit, so we encourage you to make any necessary child
care or pet care arrangements. You also may consider bringing
reading materials, a laptop, or a mobile device. Free wireless
Internet service is provided in most of our locations.

Where should I park?
See the “Directions, Parking, and Maps” information
provided in this packet. Additional resources are
available on the Duke Cancer Institute Web site at

Who will I see at my appointment?
Who you see at your appointment will vary
depending on your diagnosis and individual
health care needs.
In most cases your appointment will begin with
a nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant
who will review your health history with you.
He or she may ask additional questions to help
create a complete view of your treatment history
and diagnosis.
One of our missions is to train future health care
providers. You may be seen by a resident or fellow
pursuing specialty training in the medical field. Both
will work with your oncology specialist and are part
of your care team.
After meeting with the care team, you will be
seen by the cancer specialist who will discuss your
treatment options and next steps in detail.
The Duke Cancer Center offers disease-site nursing,
which means that you have nurses who are focused
on your particular cancer. At each appointment,
you will see the same nursing team. This approach
gives you a single point of contact for questions or
concerns that arise outside the clinic.
Several of our programs offer multidisciplinary
clinics where patients meet with one or more
providers in one day, including a medical oncologist,
surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and other
subspecialists.
What do I need to know about
clinical trials offered at Duke?
During your visit, you may also meet with a clinical
trials coordinator to determine if you are eligible to
take part in any clinical trials during your treatment.
A cancer clinical trial is a medical research study
in which people participate as volunteers to test
therapies such as new drugs, new approaches to
surgery or radiation therapy, new combinations
of treatments, devices, or gene therapy. The Duke
Cancer Institute is committed to offering you the
most advanced care possible. We offer hundreds
of clinical trials for the treatment and prevention
of many forms of cancer. Some of these trials are
available only at Duke.

What should I know about
insurance and my bill?
Who do I call with questions
about billing or insurance?
Duke participates with most insurance companies,
Medicare, and North Carolina Medicaid. Prior to
your visit, check with your employer or insurance
company to see if you have access to health care
services at Duke. Otherwise, you may be responsible
for all or a large portion of your bill.
If you have any questions about your co-payments,
deductibles, or coinsurance requirements, please
call your insurance company. If you have questions
about your bill or would like to speak with someone
about financial assistance, contact the Duke
Medicine Customer Service Center at 800-782-6945.
Bring your complete health insurance information,
including identification, insurance cards, and
authorization forms.
Who do I contact about my experience
at the Duke Cancer Center?
Co-payments for physician and hospital care and
other balances you may owe are due on the day you
receive services. Your insurance may also require
you to pay for estimated coinsurance or deductibles
related to your care. If you have multiple appointments, your insurance company may require
multiple co-payments.
Duke is committed to providing care to patients
with dignity and respect. If you cannot pay your
bill in full, please tell us and let us help. Our
patient account representatives and financial
care counselors will assist you with filling out
applications for government sponsored programs,
monthly payment plans, and other financial
assistance programs available for those patients
who meet certain financial criteria. Financial care
counselors are located on all floors throughout
the Duke Cancer Center.
Our goal is to give you high quality care and an
outstanding patient experience. To help us serve
you better, we use feedback from our patients to
identify opportunities for improvement. About two
weeks after your appointment you may receive a
patient satisfaction survey in the mail. Please take
a few moments to complete and return it in the
postage-paid envelope. If your feedback is urgent,
or you wish to talk with someone, please contact
our patient advocates at 919-681-2020.

A variety of support services
The Duke Cancer Institute combines
leading-edge research with compassionate
care. Our commitment is to treat you,
not just your cancer. Trained counselors,
nutritionists, social workers, pharmacists,
chaplains, interpreters and others help
patients and their loved ones understand
their options, make decisions, manage the
effects of cancer and its treatment, and find
meaning in the experience.

American Cancer Society Road to
Recovery program
The Road to Recovery program is a free
service that matches patients living in
Durham County who need transportation
with local volunteers who are willing to
drive them to oncology appointments
at the Duke Cancer Center or Durham
Regional Hospital. Cancer patients who
need transportation to their appointment
or would like more information about the
program can call 800-ACS-2345.

Convenience and security when you register
Keep in touch with carePages
When you register, you will be asked if you would like to enroll
in Duke’s PatientSecure Program. The PatientSecure Palm
Vein Biometric Identification System is one of the many ways
we work to ensure that every patient has the best experience
possible. The system is designed to ensure your safety, protect
your privacy, speed up the registration process, and make
your future visits more convenient. PatientSecure identifies
patients by scanning the vein pattern of the palms of their
hands. The scanner uses harmless light to identify your unique
vein pattern to create an encrypted and protected digital file,
which is linked to your unique medical record.
As part of its commitment to patient-centered care, Duke
Medicine offers an online tool that helps patients connect
with their support systems back home. CarePages are
free Web pages that patients can create to communicate
with loved ones throughout their experience at Duke
University Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, or Durham
Regional Hospital.

Air travel and lodging information
Each year thousands of patients locally and from across the country
seek treatment from the specialists at the Duke Cancer Institute.
Many of these patients need a place to stay during their visit.
The Duke Cancer Center is approximately 16 miles from the
Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). Taxis, shuttles, and
public transportation are available at the airport, and some hotels
offer transportation assistance as well.

facility in Durham. Ask about shuttle services and a “medical room

Caring House offers comfortable and
affordable housing for adults receiving
outpatient treatment at the Duke Cancer
Institute and their caregivers. A referral
from a clinical social worker or patient
resource manager is needed for first-time

Ronald McDonald House provides
temporary housing for pediatric patients
receiving treatment at Duke and their
families. Your social worker or patient
