MEDICAL INFORMATION
The Czech medical system is no longer entirely socialized. It is partially government-run and
partially private, and there are a number of western-trained doctors now practicing in Prague. While
medical facilities may seem worn and out-dated to the average westerner, the staff does maintain a
standard of cleanliness.
The Czech philosophy of medical care and the doctor-patient relationship tend to be more European
in approach. That is, the doctor will be less likely to share information about the patient’s condition
with the patient than is generally the case in the west. This is a cultural difference and not a
deficiency in medical care. You may have to ask more questions in order to get information. In
addition, it may be helpful to know that “doctor’s orders” are often not questioned in this culture
and this culture and alternative treatments are not always offered.
The Czech medical system is very segmented. There is not one central emergency room, thus
emergencies are often sent to the facility that treats the specific medical condition. If an injury is the
result of an attack or other criminal case, the patient would be sent to the police hospital. Also, it is
not uncommon to find closed doors (where you would knock or ring for service) rather than an open
nursing station.
Foreigners who use Czech medical facilities are expected to pay for their care. Credit cards may not
be accepted and insurance cards are not usually accepted in lieu of payment. Generally, patients
who have overseas insurance coverage should expect to pay the bill and then seek reimbursement
from their insurance company.

just medical). There are quite a few listings for clinics and doctors who speak English as well as

Emergency Information
In the case of a major medical emergency, you should first call the Záchranná služba, the state
ambulance service. The ambulance driver will take you to the nearest or best-equipped hospital for
your problem. It is possible to request a specific hospital but the decision is on the ambulance
service. Not all staff at Záchranná služba speaks English. Expats should keep in mind a few
phrases. Nehoda means ”accident”, pomoc is the word for “help”, and nemocnice is “hospital”. Give
the operator the name and address where the ambulance is needed.
If you are incapacitated or have someone to help, you can go to a nearby hospital or one of the 24hour clinics that cater to foreigners.
If you have an emergency and have a prescription for medication, it may require a trip to a lékárna
(pharmacy) to have it filled. In addition to prescription drugs, a lékárna carries over–the-counter
medications (see Pharmacies p. 15 ). To find a 24- hour pharmacy near you, look in the Yellow
Pages under Lékárny nepřetržitou pohotovostní službou. Many items “over-the-counter” in other
countries are not available here without a doctor’s prescription. Also a drogerie carries only general
care items and toiletries and not prescriptions.
In the unfortunate case of the death of a family member, contact your embassy. Many embassies
can also help provide referral for a wide variety of unique medical needs.

While the facilities are a little bit older than Na Homolce, many of the doctors speak English and
provide emergency and pediatric care. They also have a foreigner’s information center located on
the bottom floor near the emergency room. It is the best place to go with a pediatric emergency.

The facility has the reputation of being used by foreign dignitaries in Prague. They have an Englishspeaking reception area as well as many bi-lingual doctors including German, Russian and French.
The well- stocked pharmacy is adjacent to the foreigner’s clinic. In addition, they also employ
general practitioners, surgeons, dermatologists, an ear, nose, and throat doctors. They have a very
good pediatric department headed by Dr. Petr Žáček. If a specialist is needed, one can be
recommended and seen on the same day. Foreign health insurance and major credit cards are
accepted.

There are other locations throughout Prague listed in the Yellow Pages but this is the main location.
They provide a full range of all basic immunizations as well as the whole range of “exotic”
vaccinations for special travel needs. While you can get immunizations through your family
physician or pediatrician, Hygienic Stations are the main suppliers and you can go directly to them
for immediate short-term needs, especially if you have to travel on short notice. Not everyone
speaks English but they do some English-speaking doctors. Cost depends on the vaccination but is
less than what you might pay through your regular doctor.

Be aware that tick shots against tick-borne encephalitis are highly recommended.

For minor aches and pains you can get some advice in pharmacies, of you speak Czech or have a
translator with you, since not many pharmacists speak English. Please refer to the “Czech
Vocabulary” in the appendix for some helpful Czech words and phrases.
