Prevention and Treatment for Positive Patient Outcomes
A 7-part series, one evening a month from November 2016 - May 2017
FLEXIBLE! Attend all or some of the sessions, in-person at MAHEC or via webinar.
HIV prevention and treatment is a public health priority for
Western North Carolina. With the explosive rise of Heroin
and Injection Drug Abuse in this area, it is imperative that
providers are aware of the screening protocols needed and
their patients are adhering to treatment plans after diagnosis.
MAHEC, in collaboration with Western North Carolina AIDS
Project, seek to educate providers on the reality that HIV is
still a major factor in our communities. This 7-part series
will focus on HIV screening, prevention, and adherence to
treatment plans after positive diagnosis.
Target audience includes, physicians, physician assistants,
nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and public health workers

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this knowledge-based educational
activity, participants will be able to:
• Evaluate patient high-risk behaviors associated with HIV transmission
• Relate the behaviors of HIV transmission to your patients
• Improve routine testing practices in healthcare settings
• Utilize best practices for cultural sensitivity to be able to effectively communicate with patient population at risk for HIV infection
• Increase treatment adherence for patients on ARV therapy utilizing motivational interviewing techniques
This activity is partially supported by an unrestricted
educational grant from Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
• Analyze the heroin/opioid epidemic and the relation to HIV/
AIDS prevention to increase providers and pharmacists skills set on drug user health
• Integrate routine testing into practice

Heidi Swygard, MD, MPH earned her medical degree from Indiana
University School of Medicine and her Masters in Public Health
from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health. Dr.
Swygard’s research interests include public health, epidemiology,
and sexually transmitted diseases.
Jennifer Mullendore, MD, MSPH is the Medical Director of Buncombe
County Health & Human Services. Dr. Mullendore graduated from
the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2003 and
completed her residency at the Moses Cone Family Medicine
Residency Program in 2006, where she served as chief resident. The
following year she obtained her Master of Science in Public Health,
focused on Maternal & Child Health, from the Gillings School of
Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has worked as a clinic
physician for the Buncombe County Department of Health since
2007. In 2011 she became Medical Director for the Department,
which consolidated with DSS to become Buncombe County Health
and Human Services in 2012. She has been active with the NC
Academy of Family Physicians (NCAFP) since 2003 and currently
serves on the NCAFP Board.
Paul Martin, MD, FASAM, is a board certified Family Physician,
board certified in Addiction Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow
of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He has served
as Medical Director of the Neil Dobbins Detoxification and Crisis
Stabilization Center in Asheville since its inception in 1984. He is a
community faculty member at the Mountain AHEC Family Practice
Residency Program and works as a consultant to industries
throughout Western NC, overseeing a number of occupational
drug testing programs.
Amanda Stem, MSW works as the Advocacy Supervisor at the
Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP). Amanda entered
the field of HIV/AIDS advocacy as a second year graduate level
intern while earning her MSW from Western Carolina University.
After receiving her MSW, Amanda was a Medical Case Manager
at WNCAP, working with people living with HIV/AIDS to access
medications, council on treatment adherence, and address other
social issues that determine health outcomes. After almost two
years of case management, Amanda transitioned into her current
role as Advocacy Supervisor and addresses HIV related health
and racial disparities on the macro-level through coalition building,
community organizing, and legislative action. Amanda began her
journey in the field with a passion for addiction and harm reduction
and is continuing her dedication to educate communities on harm
reduction and HIV/AIDS advocacy issues.
Brodderick D. Roary, BS is a native of South Carolina. He has
a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and a Bachelor of Science
in Management from Coker College. After completing his
undergraduate degrees he attended Francis Marion University for a
Master’s in Education. Brodderick currently serves as the Operations
Manager with the Western North Carolina Aids Project. Prior to
joining WNCAP he worked for a local CBO in Charlotte serving
as the Ryan White Program Manager for several years and lastly
as Project Manager for a CDC funded prevention and education
program working with African American/Latino Gay, Bisexual Men
and the Transgender Community in Mecklenburg County. In the past
he has served on the Mecklenburg County Syphilis Elimination Effort
Task Force, Mecklenburg County HIV/AIDS Council, Region II MSM
Task Force, State Community Planning Group with North Carolina
Communicable Disease Unit, Ryan White Part A Quality Management
Committee and mentor with a Different Roads Home - For the Good
Road Mentoring Project. He is currently a trainer for the In It Together
–National Health Literacy Project for Black MSM. Annie Fahy, RN, LCSW, MSW, is a behavior change specialist in
the areas of health wellness and letting go of destructive patterns.
Since 2004 she has been recognized as a dynamic national trainer,
expert and presenter in Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction
and Reducing Compassion Fatigue. She has recently authored
a chapter on addictions in the Praeger Handbook of Community
Health and in 2007 composed a feature article for the Journal of
Social Work entitled “The Unbearable Fatigue of Compassion:
Notes from a Substance Abuse Counselor Who Dreams of
Working at Starbuck’s.” Annie offers consultation facilitating culture
change and implementation of evidenced based practices to bio
and behavioral health organizations. She also designs writing
workshops that support writing as a creative and healing tool for
both writers and non writers. medical course director

This activity has been planned and implemented in
accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies
of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) through the joint
providership of Mountain Area Health Education Center and
Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP). The Mountain
Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is accredited by the
NCMS to provide medical education for physicians.

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ per session except 12/13/16.
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with
the extent of their participation in the activity.
MAHEC has a pay-up-front policy for all CE programs.
Registrations received without accompanying payment will not
be processed and participants who have not paid the course
fee will not be admitted into the program.

Cancellations received at least two weeks in advance of the
program date will receive a full refund unless otherwise noted.
Cancellations received between two weeks and up to 48 hours
prior to the program date will receive a 70% refund unless
otherwise noted. No refunds will be given for cancellations
received less than 48 hours prior to the program date. All
cancellations must be made in writing (fax, mail, or email).
Substitutes can be accommodated in advance of the program.

From I-40 Westbound, take Exit 50B and merge onto Hendersonville
Road.
At the first light, turn left into the DoubleTree Hotel complex. Turn left
towards the Biltmore Village Lodge. Just before the Biltmore Village
Lodge, turn right and go up the hill to the MAHEC Biltmore Campus.
From 19-23 (I-26) take 240 East to Exit 5B (Charlotte Street). Exit
right onto Charlotte Street. At the 4th light, make a left onto Biltmore
Avenue. Proceed through 8 traffic lights. At the 9th light turn right
into the DoubleTree Hotel complex. Turn left towards the Biltmore
Village Lodge. Just before the Biltmore Village Lodge, turn right
and go up the hill to the MAHEC Biltmore Campus.
