special section + dental profiles
Greetings,
Congratulations on being selected one of Fairfield County’s Top Dentists!
I’m pleased to inform you that Moffly Media will be producing our 5th annual,
2014 Top Dentist Special Section in the July/August issues of Fairfield Living,
Greenwich, New Canaan•Darien, Westport & Stamford Magazines.
We have once again partnered with topDentists™, a peer-reviewed referral guide
service with over 40 years in combined experience in the dental industry. Dentists
must be voted in strictly by their peers, listings cannot be purchased, so inclusion in
topDentists is considered to be a distinct honor.
In conjunction with the editorial section, our magazines offer the unique opportunity to purchase a Dental profile to highlight your practice in our Special Advertising
Section. This is the most effective way to reach over 200,000+ of our affluent and
influential readers.
Enclosed is detailed information on the Special Advertising Section. Please don’t
hesitate to contact me or your Moffly Representative to answer any questions.
We look forward to partnering with you.
Best,
Heidi Kurlander-Kail

Dentists
the list
2014
Here’s a list to brighten your smile.
“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you
refer them to?”
To assemble and vet the top names in the practice of dentistry,
including specialists, the database compilers at topDentists TM sought
the answer to this question from a logical group of peers—other
dentists. Evaluators were drawn from all dentists listed online with
the American Dental Association and other local dental societies,
allowing virtually every practicing professional an opportunity to
participate in the nominating pool.
Voting for those whose work they know, dentists and specialists
were asked to consider experience, continuing education, use of new
technologies, patient care and results.
Drawing a list from the top of the compiled average scores,
additional attributes such as status in various dental academies, as well
as past awards, factored into the final decisions. All this information
has been tempered with a final check for current licensing and good
standing.
It’s a list you can trust and refer to with confidence. On the following
pages, we present contact information for 189 of Fairfield County’s
finest dentists, along with some of their useful pointers for keeping your
smile at its dazzling best.

tips from the pros
DID YOU KNOW?
GUM DISEASE is inflammation of the attachment
apparatus of the teeth, the bone and gingiva, and it
can lead to bone loss. Breaking up the plaque on a daily
basis is the most effective tool to avoid gum disease.
—Barbara Devine, general dentistry
SOME PATIENTS who are diagnosed with sleep apnea
following a sleep study, and are prescribed a CPAP
machine to use at night, find the CPAP too uncomfortable
to use successfully. They can wear an oral appliance as
alternative. The appliance holds the lower jaw forward,
which opens the airway and prevents the impairment of
their breathing and sleep.
—Jeffrey Warren, general dentistry
ON AVERAGE, endodontists perform nearly twenty-five
root canal treatments a week, while general dentists
perform less than two. Because endodontists limit
their practice solely to endodontic treatment, they are
efficient and precise. This equates to positive experiences
and faster healing.
—Brian Amoroso, endodontics
WHITENING STRIPS are relatively safe because of the
lower level of hydrogen peroxide, but if any whitening
agent is applied incorrectly it can irritate or cause damage
to the soft or hard tissue.
—Elke Cheung, general dentistry
IN MY OFFICE, one out of every five patients is an adult.
Leaving misaligned teeth untreated may lead to other
dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease, as
well as abnormal wearing of tooth enamel and difficulty
in chewing.
—Scott L. Kesselman, orthodontics
OVER THE PAST THIRTY-NINE YEARS of practice I have
noticed how important it is for people to be aware that
... minor dental disease [can] go undetected until major
treatment is needed. Full mouth radiographs are a great
tool in detection of dental disease that could remain
silent for years until detected due to pain.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES
DIGITAL DENTISTRY is becoming an increasingly valuable
component of practicing dentistry, as it eliminates our
need to take impressions in many cases. No longer will
you have to have impressions taken to fabricate crowns,
bridges and inlay/onlays. Following scanning of the mouth,
a digitalized format is sent electronically to the lab. The
most noteworthy improvement is that they are more
accurate, and greater accuracy means things will fit better
and last longer.
—David Wohl, general dentistry

tips from the pros
MYTH BUSTERS
FICTION: My wisdom teeth have caused my front teeth
to shift. This is a common plight of many a young adult
returning home from their first semester away at college.
It is even propagated by some unknowing dentists.
FACT: If you don’t wear your retainers, your teeth
will move.
—Peter Feibish, orthodontics
FICTION: Root canal treatment is painful.
FACT: Root canal treatment doesn’t cause pain; it relieves
it. With modern technologies and anesthetics, root
canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a
filling placed. Most patients see their dentist when they
have a severe toothache. The toothache can be caused
by damaged tissues in the tooth. Root canal treatment
removes this damaged tissue from the tooth, thereby
relieving the pain you feel.
—Brian Amoroso, endodontics
FICTION: A good alternative to root canal treatment
is extraction.
FACT: Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very
best option. Nothing can completely replace your natural
tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to
avoid certain foods. Keeping your own teeth is important
so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of
foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance
in your diet. If your dentist recommends extraction,
ask if root canal treatment is an option.
—Brian Amoroso, endodontics
CARING FOR YOUR TEETH
SENSITIVE FORMULA TOOTHPASTES are clinically proven
to work, and they are worth the extra expense if you
suffer from sensitivity—temporary discomfort caused by
exposure to cold or hot. You should have a dental exam
first to make sure your discomfort is not coming from
decay or infection. If teeth are otherwise healthy, then try
a sensitive formula. Its active ingredient, potassium nitrate,
takes up to two weeks to take effect, so use it exclusively
for the extent of the tube.

tips from the pros
CLEAN BETWEEN YOUR TEETH daily with floss. There
are bacteria that still linger between teeth and under the
gum line where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing
removes plaque and food particles from these areas. The
bacteria in plaque release acids that attack tooth enamel.
—Elke Cheung, general dentistry
WE RECOMMEND ELECTRIC or sonic toothbrushes.
The action of the brush actually drives fluid between
teeth and under the gum line to gently remove plaque.
—Elke Cheung, general dentistry
MOUTHWASHES CAN DO MORE than just freshen
breath. In combination with brushing and flossing,
antibacterial mouthwash can reduce plaque and help
prevent gingivitis.
—Elke Cheung, general dentistry
CALL YOUR DENTIST
COMMITMENT
A SYMPTOM THAT SHOULD NOT be ignored is dry
mouth; left untreated it can lead to a burning sensation,
tooth decay, bad breath and other oral health problems.
Saliva cleanses the mouth and begins the digestive
process as foods are chewed. When saliva is reduced,
harmful organisms grow in the mouth. Dry mouth is
usually a side effect of certain medications.

whiteners, including whitening strips, consult your dentist,
who can let you know if there are any pressing oral health
problems that need to be treated first. Then he/she can
advise you on the different whitening options and the
one that would work the best for you based on the cause
of your discoloration.

an infection, or a lesion in the mouth is not healing.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
Why did you choose to
become a dentist?
What sets you apart from
your competition?
I started working in a dental
office when I was in high
school and fell in love with
the profession. I always loved
sciences and am very artistic.
Dentistry combines both in a
very symbiotic way.
My commitment to continuing
education. I am on the
Continuing Education Council
for the Connecticut State
Dental Association, so I am
instrumental in choosing the
type of courses offered to
dentists throughout the year
and at our annual meeting. I am
proud to say that all the people
in Connecticut benefit from
the knowledge their dentists
receive from these courses.
Tell us about your most
compelling case.

Dentistry

Where did you go to school?
Georgetown University
School of Dentistry
Years in practice?
Twenty-four years
What did you want to be
when you grew up?
In junior high I enjoyed biology
class and I was always good
with my hands, so being a
dentist was a natural fit.
What symptoms do patients
ignore that a dentist can
remedy?
Bleeding gums and bad breath
What sets you apart from
your competition?
Our office submits and tracks all
insurance claims so our patients
get the maximum benefit allowed.
How do you spend your days off?
Taking my children to soccer
or dance lessons. Sometimes
I sneak out for a round of golf.

Discovering oral cancer on
a young woman without any
of the typical risk factors.
Her M.D. had told her the
lump on her tongue was a
“virus.” I recognized there
was a problem and referred
her immediately to the right
specialist. They removed a
third of her tongue and she
underwent aggressive radiation
therapy which saved her life.
I am happy to say she is
twelve-years cancer-free.

Why did you choose your
specialty?
I wanted to be the one who
helps adults and children achieve
confidence and happiness by
creating beautiful smiles.
What sets you apart from your
competition?
Our expert use of braces and
Invisalign® to create amazing
smiles on a consistent basis.
Proudly, we are the choice
for many pediatricians’ and
dentists’ children.
What is your greatest
achievement?

hive. I love to cook, read and
travel. I love to paddleboard
(especially with my two black
Labs), spend time with my
children when they return to
the “nest,” and I volunteer for
a variety of things.
Any words of advice for
dentists just starting to
practice?
That’s any easy one. Love
your patients. Treat them like
guests in your home. Try to
do everything that you can to
make their visit pleasant. Be
worthy of their trust. Always
have integrity. Do oral cancer
exams on every patient. Share
ideas and information with
colleagues and take more
courses than required to be
the best for your patients.
If you had to do it again,
would you choose dentistry?
In a heartbeat!

What did you want to be when
you grew up?
I really was not sure as a child;
I liked art, painting and working
with my hands. I was also
fascinated by biology and always
did very well in the sciences.
When it came to making a career
decision, dentistry offered both,
so it was a natural choice.

What symptoms do patients
ignore that a dentist can
remedy?
A lot of people ignore cracked
or chipped teeth. But by
the time they hurt, treating
them may involve multiple
procedures or removal. This
is where early detection and
prevention come into play.
What kind of toothbrush
do you use?
I switch between the Rota-Dent
electric toothbrush and an ultra
soft regular toothbrush.
What kind of toothpaste
do you prefer?
Fluoridex. It’s great for
prevention of decay as well as
taking care of sensitive teeth.
How do you spend your days off?
I really enjoy skiing with my family.

It is a great sport that we can all
do together. In the summer, we
all enjoy fishing. But I have to
say, it gets a little competitive.
What is your favorite TV show?
We are hooked on 24. The action
and suspense are great.
What sets you apart from
your competition?
I specialize in complex restorative
and implant dentistry. I finished
my prosthodontic residency at
Montefiore Hospital, and did a
two-year fellowship in dental
implants. This offered me great
insight into challenging restorative
dentistry. Our office is also
equipped with the latest Cone
Beam CT scan and Cerec, for
digital dentistry, which enables us
to do precise treatment planning
and reduces the chance of a
surprise later on during treatment.

nature of our practice.
Frequently, diagnostic
consultations and surgical
procedures can receive the
attention of multiple members
of our group.
Our practice consists of two
state-of-the-art offices. At least
one of our doctors is available
24/7, 365 days per year.
We are also proud to note
that our doctors have been
awarded Top Dentist status
every year.
What procedures does your
practice provide?
Some of the procedures
offered are: dental implants,
wisdom teeth extraction, bone
grafting, pediatric procedures,
TMJ treatments, reconstructive
jaw surgery, facial trauma,
oral pathology, and cosmetic
procedures such as Botox®
and fillers.
