Behavioral Health
Cancer Care and Infusion Services
MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has an inpatient treatment
program for adults and adolescents over age 16 with
emotional and behavioral problems. Care is provided
by a multi-disciplinary treatment team, including a
psychiatrist, social worker, occupational therapist, and
nursing staff. In addition, MSMH has a partial psychiatric
hospital program, which provides a highly structured
therapeutic environment during the day. We also have
24-hour emergency psychiatric service for evaluations
and crisis intervention.
Cancer Care and Infusion Services (CCIS) offers both
inpatient and outpatient oncology services. These
include chemotherapy/biotherapy administration, bone
marrow aspirations, biopsies, thoracentesis, blood/blood
product transfusion, venous access device management,
intravenous hydration, and antibiotics. MedStar St. Mary’s
Hospital also provides medical oncology/hematology
evaluations and consultations; patient education and
counseling; cancer surgery; and diagnostic testing.
All cancer services are coordinated by Cancer Care
and Infusion Services, which is located on the first floor
of the hospital’s Outpatient Pavilion. Patient parking is
available adjacent to the Pavilion; this area is wheelchair
accessible. CCIS is open Monday through Friday from 7
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A physician is available on site Monday
through Friday.
By working together with other cancer research
facilities, the team is able to make national clinical trials
available to local residents without requiring them to
travel long distances. Under the auspices of the MedStar
Washington Hospital Center Investigational Review
Board, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital offers the National
Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP),
pharmaceutical studies and MedStar Washington Hospital
Center clinical trials for all eligible and consenting
participants. We also offer clinical trials through MedStar
Franklin Square Hospital, with approval from the
Investigative Review Board of MedStar Georgetown
University Hospital.
Our cancer program
and tumor registry are
fully accredited by the
American College of
Surgeons Commission
on Cancer. Our program is also accredited by The Joint
Commission. Supportive care and treatments are offered
to some pediatric patients in conjunction with Children’s
National Medical Center, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
CCIS assists in referrals for thoracic surgery, bone
marrow transplants, stem cell transplants, cryotherapy
for liver metastasis and other treatments as needed. We
can also refer individuals for clinical trials that are open
elsewhere in the country, if not offered in the Baltimore/
Washington area.

The Birth Experience
The birth of a baby is one of the most memorable
experiences of a lifetime. At MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital,
we want that experience to be one you will treasure
always. Our beautifully appointed Family Birthing Center
features five comfortable birthing rooms furnished
with the ambience of home. A jacuzzi room provides
a relaxing setting with the holistic benefits of aquatic
therapy. Twelve postpartum rooms are designed
especially to accommodate families sharing this oncein-a-lifetime experience. We provide a Mother-Baby
model of care so during each shift you and your baby will
have the same nurse. Each patient room is private and
there are friendly waiting areas for extended families.
Our compassionate, experienced associates and expert
OB/GYNS and midwives are dedicated to this cherished
event.
MedStar St. Mary’s has a telemedicine link with
Children’s National Medical Center. If your baby requires
consultation with a specialist from Children’s, a consult
may be conducted in real time through the telemedicine
link.
One of our outpatient testing rooms provides a
bright, efficient place for you to receive streamlined care,
as needed, during pregnancy.
The hospital offers classes on childbirth, lactation,
new baby care, infant safety, and the new sibling
experience. We also offer prenatal yoga and infant
massage classes. Call 301-475-6019 for class registration
information. A lactation consultant is available to assist
new mothers after returning home. Call to tour the
Birthing Center or request a copy of our Birth Experience
booklet, which includes your own customized Birth Plan
and all your pre-registration information.

Pediatric Services: 301-475-6019
Case Management
Care coordination is an important part of every patient’s
hospitalization. Case Management is the process in which
skilled registered nurses, known as case managers, work
with social workers and utilization nurses to assist patients
and caregivers through the healing process to discharge.
Case managers make sure that tests, procedures and
activities deemed critical to patients are performed as
efficiently as possible. Case managers also help patients
and families set up effective discharge plans. Utilization
review nurses keep in touch with insurance companies to
maximize insurance benefits for patients. Social workers
help with complicated social or discharge patient needs.
They help make the transition to leave the hospital a
smooth process. Case Management emphasizes a team
approach to quality patient care. Your doctor coordinates
your care along with your case manager, your utilization
review specialist, social worker and other members of
our professional healthcare team, such as your unit nurse,
therapists, dietitians and technicians.

Hospice of St. Mary’s
Hospice is a philosophy of caring for those facing a
life-threatening illness. The hospice philosophy is that
the patient’s and family’s goals for care and comfort
are paramount. The object is to treat the whole person
and not just the disease. Hospice is an active treatment
option that focuses on holistic patient/family-centered
care that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual
and practical needs of the patient. The interdisciplinary
team of healthcare professionals works with the patient
and family to design and implement a plan of care that
is unique to the patient’s needs. Depending on the
patient/family goals, many treatment modalities can
be initiated, such as physical or occupational therapy;
dietary counseling; oxygen; medications; Reiki; massage;
music and pet therapy; and durable medical equipment.
The Hospice bereavement team continues to care for
families for 13 months following the death of their
loved one. Bereavement care focuses on helping family
members understand and move forward in the grief
process through groups, classes, counseling, personal
contact and special events such as the Memorial Service
and Camp Sunrise for children. Bereavement services are
offered to anyone in our community who has suffered a loss.
Hospice House of St. Mary’s
At times, individuals with terminal illnesses need care
that cannot be provided in their own homes. The Hospice
House often cares for patients who live alone, patients
who have a caregiver unable to continue to care for
them, or if there is intense pain or symptom management
needs. For these individuals, Hospice House offers care
and a place to call home.

Pain Management
Pain is the discomfort that alerts you to the fact that
something is wrong with your body. It can result from any
condition that stimulates special pain sensors and it may
help protect the body from further damage. Once the
source of pain is pinpointed, the reduction of suffering
becomes an important goal in patient care.
The Pain Management program at MedStar St.
Mary’s Hospital is designed to reduce pain and suffering
in a variety of patient care settings. The Department
of Anesthesiology provides an array of inpatient and
outpatient pain management options and services.

Midwifery
Patient Advocacy
A midwife focuses on the natural processes of pregnancy,
labor and birth while combining traditional skills and
modern medical techniques to safeguard normal
childbirth. In addition to caring for laboring women,
midwives often play the role of educator, guiding those
who wish to learn more about issues, such as postpartum
depression and breastfeeding, and offering in-service
seminars for nurses. Our labor and delivery area is staffed
with a midwife Monday - Friday to assist as needed.
When patients come to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for
health care, all their energy is focused on getting better.
But sometimes patients need someone to talk to —
someone who can create a bridge between the patient
and the staff caring for him or her. At MedStar St. Mary’s,
our patient advocates fill that role. If you have a concern,
or feel a patient advocate could offer you assistance, call
240-434-7022 and the patient advocate will assist you.
You may also call the main number at 301-475-8981 and

The ideal doctor is one you can
trust with the sensitive and personal
details of your health. You need
to communicate openly with your
doctor and receive clear, thorough
information in return.
You can choose your doctor
from a variety of specialties,
depending on your health plan.
Some require your primary care
physician to be an internist or
family practitioner. All plans vary,
so be sure to check. For instance,
if you’re a woman, you might be
able to choose an obstetrician/
gynecologist (OB/GYN) who
specializes in childbirth and
diseases of the female organs. If
you have children, they may need a
pediatrician, whose patients range
from newborns to teenagers. Or,
you may prefer one doctor who can
treat the whole family. A general
practitioner or family practitioner,
whose training involves a multi-year
residency, will be responsible for
your entire family’s health needs
and will refer you to specialists as
necessary.
No matter which doctor you
choose, there are some things
you can do to help ensure that the
relationship is a good one.
Be Honest.
Your physician can’t give you the

Gynecology

proper care without accurate
information. Your health is personal,
so it’s important to find someone
with whom you can be open and
honest.
Ask Questions.
Medical treatment can often be
complicated, but you still have the
right to know about your health
situation and to have your questions

team in January 2011 as Vice President, Medical Affairs - a new

Physician’s Directory
Dr. Michaels comes to MedStar St. Mary’s with a record of successful
collaboration in team building as a medical staff president,
initiating and facilitating improvements in hospital core measures,
performance improvement and safety initiatives, and revising
credentialing criteria, among others. His background includes
leadership of administrative, regulatory and review committees,
as well as community advisory panels on health care. He practiced
orthopaedic and spinal surgery in Montgomery and Prince Georges
Counties for many years and was the managing partner for his
successful practice.
His strong commitment to the recruitment and retention of highly
skilled, expertly trained physicians and surgeons in order to
deliver continued expansion of hospital services to the community
is a priority for Dr. Michaels, and he is an active participant in
this process, working with MedStar Health to enhance efforts to
provide Southern Maryland with specialists in fields that are underrepresented.
Collaboration with MedStar Health has already addressed some of
the under-represented specialty areas by having visiting physicians at
MedStar St. Mary’s. However, as our community grows and we want
to provide the most advanced technologies and techniques, we still
need additional physicians to establish “home practices” here. By
utilizing the resources of MedStar St. Mary’s and the MedStar Health
system, Dr. Michaels is fully engaged in multiple arenas to benefit the
needs of the community and advocate for the continued delivery of
quality health care in Southern Maryland.

from prescribing drugs to performing surgery, and they use the latest medical tools. DOs offer a unique
approach to patient care. Osteopathic physicians are trained to teach patients how to prevent illness and injury
by maintaining a healthy lifestyle; look at the whole person to reach a diagnosis without focusing just on
symptoms; and to help the body heal itself.

prescribing drugs to performing surgery, and they use the latest medical tools. But DOs offer something special—
