IMA Goa State Monthly Report for February 2015 I) IMA Goa State 1) IMA North Goa CME on “Kidney Diseases and Transplantation” on 22nd February 2015: IMA Goa State in association with IMA Tiswadi organized a North Goa CME programme with participation of three IMA branches namely, IMA Tiswadi, IMA Bardez and IMA Bicholim. The theme of the CME was “Kidney Diseases and Transplantation” and was held on Sunday, 22nd February 2015 at Hotel Fidalgo, Panaji. The CME was inaugurated by Dr. Pradeep Naik (Dean, Goa Medical College) who was the Chief Guest in the presence of various dignitaries including Dr. Prasad Netravalkar (President, IMA Goa State), Dr. Francisco Couto (Secretary, IMA Goa State) and other office bearers of IMA Goa State and Dr. Umesh Kamat (President, IMA Tiswadi), Dr. Anand Dalvi (Secretary, IMA Tiswadi), Dr. Sachin Palyekar (President, IMA Bardez), Dr. R. R. Sakhardande (President, IMA Bicholim) and other office bearers of IMA Tiswadi, Bardez and Bicholim branches. The Scientific Sessions had three lectures namely “Overview of Kidney Transplant” by Dr. J. P. Tiwari, Professor & Head of Nephrology, Goa Medical College, Goa; “Cadaveric Kidney Transplant” by Dr. Amit Gupta, Professor (Nephrology), SGPGIMS, Lucknow; and, “Approach to Glomerulonephritis” by Dr. Jai Prakash, Professor & Head of Nephrology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Benaras Hindu University, Benaras. This was followed by a lively Question and Answer session. About 130 doctors attended the CME from the three North Goa IMA branches. The Goa Medical Council allotted credit hours for the programme. The CME was followed by lunch. II) IMA Local Branches: A) IMA Bardez Branch i) IMA Bardez conducted CME on topic "Pain in right iliac fossa and appendicitis" by Dr. Vardhan Bhobe. Also an interactive session was conducted on "swine flu" with Dr Utkarsh Betodkar. ii) Netradeep Camp held on 1st February 2015 by IMA Bardez along with IMA Goa State B) IMA Bicholim Branch i) CME on 28/02/15: IMA BICHOLIM conducted our monthly CME on 28/02/15,at Lions Club Hall ,8 PM onwards, on the topic “Cardiology - An Update” addressed by Dr Sabhasachi Mukhopadhay, Interventional Cardiologist, NUSI Wokhardts Hospital. CME was sponsored by NUSI Wokhardts Hospital. C) IMA CQS Branch a) AAO GAON CHALEN ABHIYAN: i) 8th February 2015 Netradeep Camp was held at Govt. High School, Morpirla in association with IMA Goa State, Mukta Opticians and Cipla Pharmaceuticals. Ophthalmologist Dr. Kaushik Dhume and optometrists from Mukta Opticians examined 200 patients including school children. 3 cases of Cataract, 2 of glaucoma and a few cases of refractive errors were detected. Blood Sugar check was done with assistance from Ms. Sugandha from US Vitamins and 4 new diabetics were detected. The camp was attended by Dr. K. R. Kamath, Dr. Deepak Lotliker and Dr. Rahul Velip. b) COMMUNITY HEALTH ACTIVITIES: i) 9th February 2015: Dr. K. R. Kamath conducted a Spirometry Camp at Damodar Nursing Home, Gudi, Paroda in association with Glaxo Smithline. 14 patients were subjected to Spirometry. Necessary treatment was prescribed. ii) 10th February 2015 Dr. Rahul Velip carried out General Health Check of 16 inmates of Mother Tereza’s Home for the Destitute at Igramoll, Quepem. Free medicines were provided to those sick. iii) 11th February 2015 Dr. K. R. Kamath and Dr. Ritisha Kenkre carried out General Health Check up including post prandial blood sugar check and examination for skin diseases of inmates of Dr. Alfred Antao Memorial Old Age Home at Chandor. Free medicines were distributed to those found sick. iv) 16th February 2015 Dr. Deepak D. Lotliker carried out examination of 17 children at St. Christobel Trust Orphanage at Quepem. Necessary medicines were distributed. v) 26th February 2015 Dr. Ritisha Kenkre examined 17 children at St. Christobel Trust Orphanage at Quepem for any skin diseases. 2 children were found to have dermatological problems for which necessary medicines were dispensed. c) CMEs: i) 13th February 2015 Monthly meeting followed by a CME program on “Pharmacotherapy of Hypertension” was held at Hotel Woodlands, Margao. Dr. Amol Mahaldar, Cons. Nephrologist was the guest faculty. ii) 27th February 2015 CME on “Low Backache”, a radiologist’s perspective” by Dr. Paresh Desai, Radiologist from Apollo Victor Hospital and on “Knee Joint Conservation in Osteoarthritis” by Dr. Shreeram Kamat Dhakankar, Joint Replacement Surgeon were held at IMA House, Curchorem. d) ACHIEVEMENT: Branch member Dr. Paresh Kamat has been appointed the Chairman of Indian Red Cross Society, Quepem Taluka. D) IMA Margao Branch i) Health Camp for Margao Police: On February 15th Margao IMA organised a medical camp for Police personnel of South Goa wherein Blood Pressure, Diabetes detection and Bone Mineral Density assessment was undertaken. 101 police staff from Cuncolim, Quepem , Sanguem and Curtorim availed of this facility. Dr Prithi Araujo inaugurated the camp and vote of thanks was given by PI Hemant Madkaiker. Blood Sugar levels, Blood Pressure and Bone Mineral density were assessed. To our great surprise even young people were found to be osteopenic. A lot were first time diabetics. Dr Preeti Araujo, Dr Babita Angle, Dr B Dessai, Dr Rajesh Naik, Dr Eddie D’Melo, Dr Ricardo Teles and Dr Edwin Araujo conducted the camp. Microlabs and Pfizer helped with the samples and blood Sugar. Calcium and Vit D tabs were dispensed at 30 % discount. 20% discount was offered for the lab services. ii) CME: On 20th of Feb a CME was held at hotel Nanutel . Three speakers spoke on following topics. They were eminent doctors from KokilanBen Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. Dr. Rajesh Mistry spoke on Management of Lung masses, Dr. Vinay Kumaran spoke on Liver transplant and Outcome, and, Dr. Mandar Deshpande spoke on Role of Robotics in Head and Neck Surgery iii) Netradeep Camp held at Velim on 22nd February 2015: The Netradeep camp was held by the IMA Margao in St. Francis Xavier School on Sunday the 22nd February 2015. The camp was inaugurated with a formal function where the President, Dr. Prithi Araujo welcomed the gathering. Dr. Kaushik Dhume explained the purpose of the camp. The Parish Priest of the Village and the Sarpanch gave their advice and words of appreciation. Dr. Sudhir Shet proposed the vote of thanks. The camp was very well attended. 310 patients were examined. There were 8 patients who required cataract surgery and 247 patients who required spectacles. The volunteers from Mukta Opticians were very thorough and the examination of the patients went well in spite of the large number of patients. E) IMA Mormugao Branch a) AAO GAON CHALEN ABHIYAN 1) General health camp at Zari-05/02/2015 General health camp was conducted by Dr Rajesh Patil at Zari on 05/02/2015.11 patients were examined and necessary treatment was prescribed to them. II. GENERAL HEALTH CAMP 1) Community Health camp at Chorao on 15/02/2015 IMA-Mormugao along with Satguru foundation organised a multispeciality health camp at chorao Goa on 15/02/2015.Professor Ramchandra welcomed the gathering,Dr Pramod Sawant was the chief guest,Mr Sudesh Naik,Dy CollectorMs Sheru Vaigankar graced the camp.More than 100 patients were examined and necesarry treatment was advised .Medical doctors team led by Dr Rajesh Patil,Dr Avinash Pujari,Dr Priyanka Mashelkar,Dr Geetika Gulati,Dr Savrav Kumar, Suyash Mandurkar,Dr Brendon Peroj examined the patients. Co-ordinator-Dr Rajesh Patil 2) School Health camp: 6/2/15 Dr Prashant Suryawanshi examined kids 41 kids at Birla . Out of which 3 were symptomatic for cough and 3 had cervical lymph node enlargement. Necessary treatment was prescribed Co-ordinator Dr Prashant Suryawanshi 3) Hyperlipidemia detection camp. 25/2/15 Dr. Shradha Patil conducted a hyperlipidemia detection camp at Cortalim. 20 patients were tested out of which 8 were found to have deranged values. Necessary follow up was advised Co-ordinator- Dr Shradha Patil 4) Anemia Detection camp- 27/2/15 A total of 15 patients were screened for anemia at Cortalim. 1 patient was found to have anemia. Co-ordinator Dr Shradha Patil 5) Skin Health camp- 28/2/15 IMA Mormugao along with ESI Dispensary, Sancoale industrial estate conducted a skin health camp at Sancoale. A total of 66 patients were seen by Dr Del-Ann Alcasoas and Dr Amavel Pereira. Free medications were provided. Co-ordinator Dr Del-Ann Alcasoas III. HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMME 1) Community Health education Talk on Organ Donation-15/02/2015 IMA-Mormugao on 15/02/2015 organised a community awareness talk at Haturli, Bicholim on Organ Donation. A power point presentation and a video clip of eye donation was shown to the people.The response at the village level was very good. Lot of interaction regarding organ donation was seen.25 forms were filled pledging their eyes for donation.The talk was given by Dr Rajesh Patil. Co-0rdinator Dr Rajesh Patil 2) Health education talk on Skin care- 28/2/15 IMA Mormugao participated in an awareness talk about Skin care at Vasco. The talk was organised by the Inner wheel group of Vasco (womes’s wing of Rotary club) and was attended by 50 women. Dr Uma Kamat gave a power point presentation of “Skin care- Myths and Tips’. This was followed by a question and answer round Co-ordinator Dr Uma Kamat IV. SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME School health education programme: Tuberculosis awareness talk: 6/2/15 On 6th February Dr Prashant Suryavanshi in collaboration with Don Bosco Konkan Development Society gave an awareness talk on Tuberculosis at Birla. The talk was attended by 41 students and 17 parents V. MEDICAL DAY PROGRAMME 1) World Cancer Day-04/02/2015 IMA- Mormugao observed world cancer day on 04/02/2015 at Infant Jesus School at Velsao Goa.The programme consisted of a poster competation on the topic ‘Understanding Cancer’.Eight participants were there from the school.The head mistresss of the school welcomed the gathering. President IMA Dr. Shradha Patil introduced the objective of world cancer day,Hon Sec Dr Del-ann Alcasos compered the function and a power point presentation on the topic ‘Know cancer to No Cancer’was given by Dr Rajesh Patil Cancer surgeon from Goa Medical College.Best three posters were declared winners and all participants were awarded certificates.The management Staff, teachers and students actively interacted with the speaker.Vote of thanks was proposed by Sec Dr Del-ann Alcasos.All prizes were donated by president and secratory of IMA-Mormugao. Co-ordinator- Dr Delann Alcasoas. 2) Sexual and Reproductive health day-12/02/2015 IMA-Mormugao observed the Sexual and Reproductive health day-on 12/02/2015 at Vidya Vihar School Cortalim, Goa. Dr Shradha Patil gave a talk on “Adolescent Health” to the students of 7th,8th and 9th class of the school.there was a good interaction among the students.Ms Nisha Sail helped to conduct the talk. Co-ordinator-Dr Shradha Patil. VI. WOMEN WING ACTIVITY. 1) IMA –Mormugao during its 1st Executive Committee meeting at the IMA premisis on 06/02/2015 constituted its Women Wings Committee.This committee is led by Dr Madhuja Sawaikar as the chairmen, Dr Kuntal Thakur and Dr Sunita Pai as members and president Dr. Shradha Patil and Secretary Dr Delann Alcasoas as officiating members. 2) Zari women empowerment programme on 08/02/2015. IMA Mormugao womens wing conducted its first programme by encouraging the women from Zari slum (adopted village) by donating them news papers and adhesives to make paper baskets of various sizes and visiting their stall at Caculo Mall on 08/02/2015.This activity is initiated by NGO-Tara Trust.IMA-members bought articles made by slum women in order to encourage and develop confidence so that they can aspire for a better life. Co-ordinator-womens wing VII. OTHERS 1) Executive committee meeting- Executive committtee meeting of IMA Mormugao Branch held on 6th February 2015 at IMA hall, Rohan arcade, Vasco. Agenda as follows: i)Unaudited reports of 2014 ii)Appointment of IMA Mormugao women’s wing iii)Briefing of branch co-ordinators iv)Forthcoming events v)Audit and registration of IMA Mormugao 2) Strategy meeting at Porvorim-15/02/2015. Dr Shradha Patil attended the IMA office bearers meeting at porvorim on 15/02/2015.In this meeting the strategy was outlined by state IMA president Dr Prasad Netravalkar. VII. CME 1) Diabetes Mellitus in preganacy- 27/2/15 IMA Mormugao organised a CME at Vasco. Dr Shradha Patil welcomed the members. Dr Del-Ann Alcasoas compered the meeting. Dr Sophia Rodrigues of Manipal hospital, Dona Paula gave a presnetation on Diabetes in Pregnancy . The CME was attended by 64 members and sponsored by Manipal hospitals. 2) Myths about Urolithiasis- 27/2/15 A presenation of myths about urolithiasis and the corresponding facts was given by Dr Manjunath U N of Manipal hospitals, Dona Paula F) IMA Ponda Branch DMC,IMA Ponda Activities for Feb 2015 1. "WORLD DRIVERS' DAY" was observed under Disaster Management Cell in association with Sesa Sterlite Amona, by Dr.Basavraj Pattanshetty on Monday 9th Feb 2015. Drivers are the wheels which keep our nation moving, they deserve respect. Almost every cause has a day dedicated to itself – World Aids Day on December 1, Father’s Day on third Sunday of June, Friendships Day on first week of August and Engineers Day on June 15. Even environment has a day dedicated to it so why not come up with a new initiative to dedicate a day to Drivers Our aim is to spread our plans to as many logistics companies, Taxi and Auto Drivers Associations, and all other Drivers associations existing across India. We examined about 30 drivers with Ht, Wt , color vision ,Far vision, RBS, Blood pressure. Also awareness talk given to them about ill effects of Alcohol,& Tobacco by saying Alcohol provokes & takes away the performance. They were also made aware they are having responsibility of carrying goods, people to safe destiny. 2 2 2. G) IMA Tiswadi Branch I) Aao Gaon chalein Abhiyaan a) 1st February 2015: Meeting was held with the local community leaders in Curca village to generate public opinion in favour of the IMA activities in the adopted village of Curca. Dr. Umesh S Kamat, Dr. Anand Dalvi, Dr. Avinash Dhakankar and Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar met the local panch members and it was decided to start with baseline house to house Health Information Survey of the village by IMA team. One hundred forty six were provided free spectacles for refractive error, 10 diagnosed with cataract and were worked up for operative correction at GMCH and 6 identified with glaucoma. In all, 149 patients were screened, of which the new detectins were as follows: 7 diabetics (RBSL>200mg%), 7 with Impaired Glucose Tolerance(RBSL 140-200mg%) and 9 with BP of >149/90. Those with high parameters were adviced on lifestyle modification and follow up with their doctor with fasting blood sample report. Various community based education programmes were held by IMA. a) 4th February 2015: Dr. Umesh Kamat interacted with 33 women (mothers of Under 5 children) at an aanganwadi in St. Cruz, on “Warning Signs of Cancer” b) 4th February 2015: Dr. Anand Dalvi, Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar and Dr. Mangala Tamba made aware the members of Tulsimata Temple Mahila Mandal, Taleigaon about early detection of Ca Breast through Breast Self Examination, and also spoke on other ‘Common Cancers and their Risk Factors’. c) 8th February 2015: Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar addressed the Curca Gram Sabha on “Warning Signs of Cancer” d) 16th February 2015: School Health talk on Preventing Cancer and other Chronic Diseases by Dr. Umesh S Kamat and Dr. Vijeta Kalekar to 150 students of St. Cruz Higher Secondary School Health Awareness Talk on Warning Signs of Cancer at an aanganwadi in St. Cruz, by Dr. Umesh S Kamat Dr. Mrs. Mangala Tamba, Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar and Dr. Anand Dalvi at a Health Talk on Breast Self Examination and Common Cancers to a Mahila Mandal in Taleigaon Dr. Sitakant Ghanekar speaking at the Gram Sabha Curca on “Warning Signs of Cancer” Dr. Vijeta kalekar with students of St Cruz HSS at a Health Talk on Preventing Cancer & Other Chronic Diseases Dr Umesh S Kamat delivering talk on Preventing cancer & Other Chronic Diseases at St Cruz HSS II) Blood Donation Camp (2nd February 2015): IMA Tiswadi in collaboration with Goa Seamen’s Association organized Blood Donation Camp at Urban Health centre-St cruz wherein 32 pints of blood was collected. IMA members Dr. Kedar Raikar and Dr. Umesh Kamat donated blood. Blood Donation Camp at UHC St Cruz III) General Health Camp (7th February 2015): Health camp was held at Asha Mahal, Taleigaon wherin Dr. Mrs. Mangala Tamba, Dr. Leslie Saldanha, Dr. Umesh Kamat and Dr. Anand Dalvi examined the inmates (women and children). Free medicines were dispensed as deemed necessary. Dr. Mrs. Tamba gave a health talk on ‘Maintaing Personal Hygiene’. Advice was given to the aanganwadi bai and the mothers present on strategies to improve nutritional status of the under 5 children.
