A sonohysterogram is an ultrasound procedure that allows the radiologist to better evaluate the cavity and lining of the uterus after introduction of a sterile saline solution. Reasons for the study include
post-menopausal bleeding and infertility.
What to Bring to Your Appointment:
* A list of all medications - remember to take them as usual the day of
the procedure.
* Your OHIP card
*The radiologist will introduce a catheter (tube) into the cervix and inject
sterile saline into the uterine cavity
*The radiologist and/or sonographer will take ultrasound mages of the
uterus and pelvis.
*During the procedure you will be informed about what is occurring
*The procedure is not painful and is usually associated with only minor discomfort. It may help to take ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) prior to the procedure.
Before the procedure:
*Please arrive about 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
* You will be required to have a full bladder when you arrive. Two hours
before your appointment time, start drinking 1.25 litres (5 cups or 40
oz.) of water. Finish drinking the water one hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder.
* You will be required to sign a consent form
After the procedure:
*You will experience some leaking of fluid and possibly bleeding—don’t
worry about this, this is normal. You will be given a sanitary pad to protect
your clothing.
*You should not introduce anything into the vagina for 24 hours following
the procedure (no tampons, no douching and no intercourse).
What to expect during the procedure:
*The sonographer will perform a pelvic ultrasound prior to the procedure
and will then ask you to empty your bladder
*The actual procedure takes about 10 minutes
*The radiologist will insert a speculum into the vagina and will clean the
cervix with antiseptic solution (this is similar to a pap test)
*Complications are rare but you should contact your physician if you experience fever, persistent pain or unusual bleeding lasting more than 24 hours
after the procedure.
