Sikorsky is an orchestra piece for 18 musicians.
8 bass clarinets, 4 drum kits, 4 double basses,
trumpet and alto saxophone forms the unconventional
line up for Sikorsky-which is the 5th release of
composer and multi-reedist Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard.
Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard has been fascinated by the sound of
clarinets for long, and the clarinet quartet played a key-roll
on his 2012 release; ”Vesper”. In Sikorsky the clarinets are
playing a major roll again, and together with the other
instruments they creative a mystic and fascinating landscape
of sound. With associations to the sound of the Sikorsky
helicopter the ensemble takes of.
Key elements of Sikorsky are the phenomena interference
and transformation. The interferences in Sikorsky appear
throughout the piece as a result of the closely voiced clarinet-ensemble. The inference is a phenomenon that appears
when two tones are played close to each other. A third tone
will then appear out of nothing-and this tone is not only
heard, it´s also experienced a psychical bodily impact.
The transformations in Sikorsky works as attempts to trick
the audial senses. Løkkegaard tries to manipulate with our
perception of sound. A cymbal suddenly sounds like a double
bass, a double bass suddenly sounds like a clarinet and a
clarinet sounds like a trumpet. Often the sounds even seem
as they where not acoustic but electronic.
Sikorsky is released as LP+download,
CD and a limited edition diasframe-box +
download. For best listening experience
Sikorsky should be played with a high
volume. Use good speakers or headphones.
About the artist:
improvisation. Throughout his later production he moves towards an expression between classical music and improvised music. His latest work is transcending the
borders of genre and form, and through a series of experiments and installations he
explores the overlap between sounds, science and music. How sounds have the capability to affect the human body-and how the human body is to be heard in sounds are the
main focus of his work. Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard have received several awards for his
work, among others a Danish Music Award, several Danish Music Award nominations,
