SALZBURG Another sight Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the bestpreserved city centres north of the Alps. The baroque jewel therefore also is known as the “Northern Rome”. Is a city rich in culture and history, earned UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Usually is well known as the birthplace of the genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Is the fourth largest city in Austria and the capital city of the Federal State Salzburg. The highlights of Salzburg are among the most famous of the world, such as Mozart's place, the Fortress “Hohensalzburg”, the chimes (“Glockenspiel”), the Residenz-Brunnen (Residenz-fontain), the Salzburger Dom (Salzburg Cathedral) and many other important and historically worthwhile churches, the baroque “Lustschloss Hellbrunn”(château de plaisance, summer residence) and its marvelous gardens in the south of the city, …. and much more. “Much more” for <Specialists> includes: Salzburg also is one of the places, where Paracelsus (born Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim) "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose permits something not to be poisonous." lived (and is buried), the private <Paracelsus Medical University of Salzburg> (founded 2002/2003) carries his name ( http://www.pmu.ac.at/en/94.htm ) The University of Salzburg (“Alma Mater Paridiana”) was founded by “Fürst”-Archbishop Paris Graf Lodron 1622/1625 (closed 1810 and re-erected 1962). ( http://www.sbg.ac.at ) The foundation of the “St. John’s Hospital” predecessor of today‟s SALK-Salzburger Landeskliniken GesmbH, took place in 1695 by the ecclesiastic & secular leader “Fürst-“Archbishop Johann Ernest Graf Thun, Christian Andreas Doppler (“Doppler-Effect”) was born & raised, Johann Michael Haydn (famous Composer and “Hofkapellmeister“, friend of W. A. Mozart), brother of the famous Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (“The Creation”, ”The Seasons”), lived (and is buried) Georg Johannes, Ritter von Trapp lived with his second wife, Maria, and his family. Maria made arrangements for the family to sing at various events as a way of earning a livelihood left but later on they had to leave Austria and their destiny gave rise to the famous movie “The Sound of Music” (“Trapp Family”), where the Christmas-Carol “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht (Silent Night,Holy Night) started out to conquer the world, Herbert von Karajan and other renowned artists acted as famous conductor(s) of /during the “Salzburg Festival” productions, Georg Trakl (poet), Stefan Zweig (poet) and Thomas Bernhard (poet) lived for a long time. Leopold Kohr, Alternative Nobel Laureate ("World Livelihood Award", 1951 publication of "The Breakdown of Nations", “Small is beautiful”) was born near the City of Salzburg has lived here too.
