interesting facts about the Warmia and Mazury
Many famous, historical people used to live in Warmia and Mazury. Many still do. The most famous
person whose fame and achievements transcend the times he lived in is Nicolaus Copernicus (born
February 19th, 1473 in Toruń, died May 24th, 1543 in Frombork). Copernicus was a Polish astronomer, a
gifted, true Renaissance man. Copernicus not only was the author of the revolutionary ‘De revolutionibus
orbium coelestium’, (‘On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres’), a treaty on heliocentric vision of the
universe, but contributed also to the development of economics- the Copernicus-Gresham rule, and
geometry- Copernicus’ theorem.
Below: a list of famous people from different domains of science, culture, art and politics.
Nicolaus Copernicus (born February 19th, 1473 in Toruń, died May 24th, 1543 in Frombork). Foremost
an astronomer, Copernicus studied also mathematics, law, economics, military strategy and astrology.
Copernicus was also a doctor and translator.
Ignacy Krasicki (born February 3rd, 1735 in Dubieck, died March 14th, 1801 in Berlin).
A representative of Polish Renaissance and dubbed ‘the Prince of Polish poets’, Krasicki was the Duke of
Sambia and the Count of the Holy Roman Empire. He became the bishop of Warmia in 1767, the bishop
of Gniezno in 1795 and served as the President of the main court of the Crown in Lublin in 1765. Krasicki
was a poet, prose writer and a publicist. As the cavalier of the Maltese Order he received the noble
Devotionis Cross. In 1781 Krasicki wrote ‘Mikołaja Doświadczyńskiego przypadki” (‘The Adventures of
Nicolaus Doświadczyński’) considered to be the first ever Polish novel. Krasicki mostly wrote fairy tales,
satires and heroicomic poems.
Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongovius (born July 19th, 1764 in Olsztynek, died June 3rd, 1855 in Gdańsk).
Mrongovius, born in Warmia and a citizen of Gdańsk, was an Evangelical minister, philosopher, linguist,
translator and editor. He was one of the first to study Kashubian folklore and his work was honoured by
naming, in 1945, the former German town of Sensburg- Mrągowo.
Gustaw Gizewiusz (born May 21st, 1810 in Pisz, died May 7th, 1848 in Ostróda).
Gwizjusz was an Evanglical minister, philosopher, social, national and political activist in Mazury. In
recognition of his work in 1946 the locality of Łuczany (Lötzen) was named Giżycko.
Wojciech Kętrzyński (born July 11th, 1838 in Lötzen (currently Giżycko), died January 15th, 1918 in
Lvov).
Kętrzyński was a Polish historian and for many years a director of the National Ossoliński Institiute in
Lvov. In recognition of his work the locality of Rastembork was named Kętrzyn in 1946.
Michał Kajka (born September 27th, 1858 in Skomack Wielki, died September 22nd, 1940 in Orzysz).
Kajka was a folk Mazurian poet and columnist who contributed to strengthening the feeling of national
belonging in Mazury.
Feliks Nowowiejski (born February 7th, 1877 in Wartembork- currently Barczewo in Warmia, died
February 18th, 1946 in Poznań).

Nowowiejski was a Polish composer and a virtuoso organ player. Since 2002, an annual Feliks
Nowowiejski International Choir Music Festival is held in Barczewo. The Barczewo museum is named
after the composer as well and is called the Feliks Nowowiejski Music Salon.
Seweryn Pieniężny (born February 25th, 1890 in Olsztyn, died February 24th, 1940 in Hohenbruch
concentration camp).
Pieniężny was a journalist, editor and publisher of ‘Olsztyn Daily’. A social and educational activist and a
member of the local government his work was commemorated by naming the town of Melzak in 1945Pieniężno.
Karol Małłek (born March 18th, 1898 in Brodowo, died August 28th, 1969 in Krutynia).
Małłek was a writer, folklorist, columnist and teacher. He received the Order of Polonia Restituta and the
Golden Cross of Merit.
Czesław Klimuszko (born August 23rd, 1905 in Nirośno, died August 25th, 1980 in Elbląg).
Klimuszko was a Polish priest, Franciscan monk, visionary, clairvoyant, medium, parapsychologist and
herbalist.
Krzysztof Klenczon (born, January 14th, 1942 in Pułtusk, died April 7th, 1981 in Chicago).
Klenczon was a Polish composer, guitarist and vocalist. A rock festival called the Days and Nights of
Szczytno is organized annually to commemorate his artistic achievements.
Marian Bublewicz (born August 25th, 1950 in Olsztyn, died February 20th, 1993 in Lądek- Zdrój).
Bublewicz was a race- car driver and in 1992 won the title of the Vice Champion of Europe. Bublewicz
won many times the title of the Champion of Poland and established the Marlboro Rally Team.
Krzysztof Daukszewicz (born Ocober 30th, 1947 in Wichrowo).
Daukszewicz is a Polish satirist, columnist, lyrics writer, poet, singer, guitarist and composer. He was
awarded numerous music and literary awards.
Ryszard Rynkowski (born October 9th, 1951 in Elbląg).
Rynkowski is a Polish singer, composer, pianist and actor. For his achievements he was awarded the
Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Piotr Bałtroczyk (born December 4th, 1961 in Olsztyn).
Bałtroczyk is a journalist, poet, singer, announcer, satirist, radio and TV presenter.
Izabela Trojanowska (born April 22nd, 1955 in Olsztyn).
Trojanowska is a Polish singer and actress.
Barbara Książkiewicz (born September 14th, 1950 in Elbląg).
A singer.
Tadeusz Lampka (born June 10th, 1951 in Elbląg). A film production manager, Lampka has been the
producer or film production manager of many popular TV series, including ‘Złotopolscy’ (1997-2006), ‘L,
like Love’-‘M jak Miłość’- (2000-2006), ‘The colours of happiness’ –‘Kolory szczęścia’- (2007-2010) and
film such as: ‘Never in life’ – ‘Nigdy w życiu’- (2004), ‘Just love me’- ‘Tylko mnie kochaj’- (2006).
Krzysztof Hołowczyc (born June 4th, 1962 in Olsztyn). A Polish race- car driver and TV presenter. From
2007 till 2009 Hołowczyc was a member of the European Parliament. He received the Knight’s Cross of
the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Iwona Szymańska-Pavlović (born November 2nd, 1962 in Olsztyn).
Szymańska- Pavlovic is a dancer and she has won the Polish dance championship many times, both in
Latin and ballroom dancing. She is an international dance umpire.
Marek Kisieliński (born in 1974 in Nidzica).
Kisieliński is a Polish guitarist, composer, arranger, music producer and multi instrumentalist who worked
with many well-known vocalists in Poland and abroad. Kisieliński has worked with Edyta Bartosiewicz,
Beata Kozidrak, Patrycja Markowska, Ania Wyszkoń, Krzesimir Dębski and such bands as: Acid
Drinkers, Harlem, Video and Bracia.
Norbert Dudziuk „Norbi” (born May 2nd, 1972 in Ostróda).
‘Norbi’ is a singer, radio presenter and TV journalist.
Piotr Wiwczarek (born October 22nd, 1965 in Olsztyn). Wiwczarek, known also as Behemoth [1] is a
Polish vocalist, guitarist and music producer. He was the co-founder, leader, main composer and lyric
writer of ‘Vader’- a death metal music band.
Zbyszek Godlewski (born August 3rd, 1952 in Zielona Góra, died December 17th, 1970 in Gdynia).
Godlewski worked for Gdynia Shipyard and was shot during December upheavals. He is the symbol of
December 1970 victims and his death is commemorated in the ballad ‘Janek Wiśniewski’.
Zbigniew Nienacki (born January 1st, 1929 in Łódź, died September 23rd, 1994 in Morąg).
Nienacki was a writer, journalist and the author of ‘Mr Car Adventures’ series (Przygody Pana
Samochodzika) for young readers.
Ernst Wiechert (born May 18th, 1887 in Piersławek near Mrągowo, died August 24th, 1950 in Uerikon,
Switzerland). Wiechert was a German writer.
Bronisław Wildstein (born June 11th, 1952 in Olsztyn).
Wildstein is a Polish columnist, journalist and writer. From May 11th, 2006 till February 26th, 2007
Wildstein served as the Chairman of the Polish Television management board.
Anna Samusionek (born June 24th, 1971 in Olsztyn).
Samusionek is a Polish film and television actress.
Wojciech Malajkat (born January 16th, 1963 in Mrągowo).
Malajkat is a Polish film and theatre actor. A film director and theatre play professor Malajkat teaches at
the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre Academy in Warsaw.
Piotr Szwedes (born August 5th, 1968 in Lidzbark Warmiński).
Szwedes is a Polish film, theatre and television actor as well as TV presenter.
Katarzyna Herman (born August 13th, 1971 in Mrągowo)
herman is a Polish actress.
Maria Pakulnis (born July 2nd, 1956 in Giżycko)
Pakulnis is a Polish film, theatre and radio actress.
Paweł Burczyk (born January 17th, 1969 in Elbląg)
Burczyk is a Polish film actor.
Andrzej Samulowski (born April 2nd, 1840 in Sząbruk, died April 10th, 1928 in Gietrzwałd)

Samulowski was a Polish folklore poet, social and educational activist and a teacher. In 1878 he
established the first Polish bookstore in Warmia- the building is still standing nowadays.
Siegfried Lenz (born March 17th, 1926 in Ełk). A German writer and the winner of the Goethe Award,
Lenz is also an honorary citizen of the town of Ełk.
Johann Gottfried Herder (born August 25th, 1744 in Morąg, died December 18th, 1803 in Weimar).
Herder was a German philosopher, minister and writer who greatly influenced the development of the
national idea (Volk concept) as well as the development of philosophy and the history of art. Herder was a
representative of the Weimar classics. The Johann Gotfried Herder museum is in Morąg.
