ALLIE X In February 2014, a startling debut single “Catch” officially introduced an unidentifiable and singular voice known as Allie X. Released as an intoxicating GIF of a mysterious female figure spinning in rotation with a large syringe in her hand, the World of X was injected into public consciousness. Fragments of a backstory began to appear shortly thereafter: born somewhere in Canada, studied as a resident at the Canadian Film Centre under the Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna, rumored to be based in LA. But these scant details are secondary to the sound: dreamy pop melodies bringing forth the sonic landscapes for a voice that is at once glossy and gloomy, radiant and dusky, a mirror of the enigmatic figure behind the sound. Circling around themes of delusional dreams, crippling anxieties, self-destruction, endless ambition, addiction, medicine, and the ambiguity of human existence, Allie X offers music and art that become chronicles of this self-inflected vortex. From the visual series which present a girl spinning in circles and presumably going nowhere, a deeper understanding and perspective begins to sink in with the audience, opening the door for a range of mixed feelings, #FeelingX. The musical compositions and production bring together a gleaming and polished surface with more somber and shadowy edges- a sonic showcase of the paradoxical nature of the project- highlighting a fresh palette of sounds and a raw talent that is remarkably mature for a debuting artist. It’s electronic theatrical dream pop with high ambitions and supreme execution. From the delivery of the music, to the visuals, to the live experience, the World of X is intent on delivering a cultural impact that will last beyond our time. Fact.” - REFINERY29 “[Allie X] has just dropped the best song of the year so far.” - IDOL ATOR, RE: “C ATCH” “The beauty of Allie’s work is that as much as there’s darkness lurking, the melodies and rhythms are bright and catchy enough to draw in those who want to take a pop song at face value. The themes may be heavy but her music could easily slot next to Katy Perry’s aspirational anthems.” - NOISEY / VICE “A relentless and immediate sugar rush with a slight metallic aftertaste, [“Catch” is] a glorious kiss-off . . . The way Allie leans into the track’s weightless chorus . . . pushes it into the stratosphere where it shimmers with Technicolor warmth.” - PITCHFORK MEDIA
