Maria Perschy
Maria Herta Perschy was born in Eisenstadt. Her parents'
house was located in Eisenstadt's Unterberg district at no. 19
(today Wertheimer Gasse 8). At the age of 17 she took her
first drama lessons at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar drama
school in Vienna. Her movie "Nasser Asphalt" ("Wet
Asphalt", 1958, with Horst Bucholz) brought her into the
limelight of the international movie world. This was followed
by engagements in Great Britain, France and Hollywood.
Her international breakthrough came with the movie "Man's
Favorite Sport" with Rock Hudson. Perschy also participated
in various German and international TV series. In 1986, she
returned to Vienna, where she died in 2004.

The famous painter was born in Eisenstadt on December 24,
1738. With the assistance of his father Christian Koepp, who
was the Prince's Court Painter and Architect, he painted the
ceiling fresco "Christ's Ascension" in the Eisenstadt Hill
Church. The small street between Laschoberstraße and
Rusterstraße is named after him.
He studied at the Academy of
Fine Arts in Vienna from 1924
to 1928. In 1945, the occupying forces made him accept
the office of mayor. After a
hard day's work he would turn to painting to draw the
strength he needed for his duties.

He came from the Italian violin tradition and was trained in
Venice. At the age of 16 years he was made a member of
Prince Paul II Anton Esterházy's court orchestra. When Haydn
was appointed Kapellmeister (court conductor), Tomasini was
already one of the leading violinists there. Haydn composed
several soli in his symphonies and at least two violin concertos
for his orchestra's concert master. He was laid to rest in the
crypt of the Hill Church. His son Alois Tomasini (1779-1858)
was trained by Haydn.

She was born a shepherdess in Kleinhoeflein on February 18.
The Italian tenor Bevilaqua, who was employed at Prince
Esterházy's court, discovered her. She was brought to the
Prince's court, where she was educated and trained. She performed in Graz, Vienna and several Italian opera houses
before she married tenor Pohl. She became widely known
under the name Pohl-Beisteiner.

(1801, Kleinhöflein/Eisenstadt - 1866, vienna)
August (later Gustinus) amazed everyone with his striking musical talent; at the tender age of 6 years he already played the
violin in quartets. In 1900, he caught epidemic meningitis in
Prague which left him completely deaf. He took up clay
modelling when he was eight and had his first exhibition in
Graz at the age of 15. His works of art are much acclaimed.
Ambrosi's sulptural oeuvre comprises approx. 2.300 works of
art including around 650 portraits. The house in Permayerstrasse, where he was born, now accommodates the Labour
Market Service.

The composer and conductor was born in what was then the
Princes Esterházy's residence for musicians (today the parish
house in Oberberg). He was the son of violoncellist Joseph
Franz Weigl and godson of Joseph Haydn. He studied music
with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, who left his mark on the
early Classical era, and with Hofkapellmeister (Royal Court
Conductor) Antonio Salieri.
His honorary grave is located in Vienna's Central Cemetery.

great son.
Elisabeth Beisteiner
The Wolfs, a bourgeoisie family of wine merchants, were
doubtlessly the most prominent Jewish family in the region’s
more recent history. The family like no other left its mark on
Jewish Eisenstadt. Today the Austrian Jewish Museum is
accommodated in a building which the Wolf family bought in
1875 as a headquarters for the "Leopold Wolf's Soehne"
winery founded in 1790. Most noteworthy of the family was
Sándor Wolf, born in 1871. His art collection comprising
26.000 objects provides the permanent inventory for the
Burgenland Provincial Museum. Apart from the former Wolf
company headquarters, the family grave in the new Jewish
cemetery is among the most beautiful and eye-catching.
Following the death of Ottilie Wolf in 1927, the Wolves built
an urn mausoleum in Wolfgarten on the slopes of the
Leithagebirge mountains because they were not permitted to
lay her to rest in the Christian or the Jewish cemetery. All other
family members who died between 1938 and 1988 were
also laid to rest in this mausoleum.

Alois (Luigi) Tomasini
Fanny Elßler, or rather Franziska Elßler, was one of the most
famous Austrian dancers of the 19th century. Her older sister
Theresia was also an acclaimed dancer. Fanny Elßler was the
daughter of Joseph Haydn's favourite copyist Johann Elssler.
She was born in Vienna and studied at the ballet school of the
Vienna Court Theatre (Wiener Hoftheater). She received her
first engagement at the Theatro San Carlo in Naples in 1824.
Elßler's unparalleled success began in Berlin in 1830 and continued in Paris and on her tours through Europe, Russia, Cuba
and North America. National dances such as the polka, the
krakowiak and her famous cachucha conquered audiences
throughout the world. She is buried in Hietzing cemetery. In
Eisenstadt Fanny-Elßlergasse was named after her.

From May 1728, he was Joseph Haydn's predecessor as
Kapellmeister (court conductor) for Prince Esterházy. When
Haydn was appointed Kapellmeister in 1762, Werner was
left in charge of church music, which was the main focus of his
oeuvre. He composed more than 50 masses and uncounted
German oratorios. A gravestone in the crypt (lower church) of
Eisenstadt's Hill Church reminds of this important musician.

Recommended by Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel
was appointed his successor as Hofkapellmeister (court conductor) for Prince Esterházy in 1804. Hummel was not only a
composer of genius but was deemed the best pianist of his
time and Beethoven's most ardent rival. Hummel's grave is
located at the Historical Cemetery of Weimar. A bust,
brought to Eisenstadt from Bratislava and erected in Ödenburgerstraße in 1963, reminds us of the composer. There is
also a pathway named after Johann Nepomuk Hummel.

Josef Hyrtl, outstanding Austrian anatomist and philanthropist,
was born in Eisenstadt on December 7, 1810, in what was
then the Princes Esterházy's residence for musicians (today
the parish house in Oberberg).
He began to study medicine in Vienna in 1831. Professors
and students recognized his talent and he was appointed
prosector of anatomy in 1833. In 1837, at the tender age of
26 years, he became professor at Prague Charles University.
To honour his achievements the municipality had a monument
erected on Josef Hyrtlplatz square on the occasion of his
150th birthday.

Provincial Capital and Free Town Eisenstadt
Eisenstadt's urban area as we know it
today has been settled ever since the
New Stone Age. The first reliable written reference to Eisenstadt is a letter
addressed to Pope Urban IV dating
back to 1264 which mentions the
"capella sancti Martini de minore
Mortin". The village of Eisenstadt
developed at that time.
Town Hall
Eisenstadt had its political and cultural heyday in the 17th and 18th
centuries which saw a flourishing of trade and crafts as well as music
and art. Numerous buildings such as Esterházy Palace, the Hill Church
and Calvary Hill, Haydn's Mausoleum and Haydn House stand proof
of the significant influence the Esterházy family and Joseph Haydn
wielded in those days.
Many more were born and bred in Eisenstadt, worked there and significantly influenced locals and the people in the region or themselves
were influenced by Eisenstadt. While some of them are commemorated to this day, many are gradually falling into oblivion. Their names,
however, live on in streets, squares, monuments and buildings throughout the city.
Schloss Esterházy
For the emperor the Esterházy family proved a military stronghold in the
battle against the Ottomans on occupied Hungarian land and subsequently
in Central Europe too. In the course of the 17th century they repeatedly had
to take up arms against the Turks, as in the battle of Vezekény in 1652 where
four members of the family lost their lives. In 1687 Count Paul Esterházy was
raised to the rank of prince by Emperor Leopold I. This honour at first was
granted to Paul only. Starting in 1712 it was relayed to the first born and from
1779 onwards was extended to all descendants of the family. The
Forchtenstein line under Paul I chose Eisenstadt as its main residence and
had the existing castle turned into a prestigious princely residence.

This booklet wants to shed light on the
history of some of these outstanding
characters and tell their story. The
people and places which testify to
their existence are yours to discover.

The Esterházy family is known for the patronage
and cultural commitment it has practiced throughout the centuries. Joseph Haydn was in their
employment from 1761 to 1790 and again from
1794 on, especially under Nikolaus I, also known
as the "Lover of Grandeur". Until his death in
1809, Haydn kept close ties with the Esterhazy
family.
Numerous other outstanding people such as
Johann Nepomuk Hummel worked at the court of
the Princes of Esterházy and were promoted by
them. The family discovered Franz Liszt's talent,
whose father was manager of the Esterházy
estates. Franz Schubert gave piano lessons to the
young countesses Caroline and Marie.
Count Nikolaus Esterházy
Franz Liszt
(1732, rohrau - 1809, Wien)
(1811, raiding - 1886, Bayreuth)
The great composer Joseph Haydn was born on
31 March 1732 in Rohrau (Lower Austria).
In 1761, Prince Paul Anton Esterházy appointed
him assistant conductor. The major part of his
oeuvre was composed during his employment at
the Esterházy court in Eisenstadt.
The Esterházy Family
We know for certain that the family's origins date back
to the early 15th century. The three brothers Count
Nikolaus Esterházy (1583-1645), Baron Paul Esterházy
(1587-1645) and Baron Daniel Esterházy (15851654) were the progenitors of the still thriving main lines
of the Hungarian dynasty. Count Nikolaus Esterházy
was the most outstanding of the three brothers; it was
due to his strategic doing and diplomacy that the
Hungarian family of lower nobility became one of the
most influential dynasties. Unconditional loyalty to the
Holy Roman Emperor (in his capacity as King of
Hungary) laid the foundation for the ascent of the
family and, amongst others, lead to Nikolaus' son Paul
being granted the title of prince.
Joseph Haydn
Following the death of Prince Nikolaus I, Haydn's
orchestra was disbanded. In 1790 and 1792,
Haydn travelled to London. Haydn is regarded
as the "father" of classical symphonies and string
quartets. His string quartets, symphonies, concertos and operas have become world-famous.
The Haydn House in Eisenstadt today is considered one of the most
comprehensive memorials ever dedicated to a musician in all of
Austria. Nowhere else are the man Joseph Haydn and his music felt
as vividly as here in his former residence.
„Room and kitchen“ have been furnished with original pieces from
Haydn’s time. The permanent exhibition features a number of exhibits
to document to his life and work.
Johann Evangelist Haydn
(1743, rohrau - 1805, Eisenstadt)
Joseph Haydn's younger brother Johann
Evangelist also found employment at the Princes'
court in Eisenstadt. He was a famous and much
acclaimed tenor. He died at the age of 62 in
Eisenstadt and was buried in the old Oberberg
cemetery. The Meierhof cemetery chapel is all
that reminds us of him.
Johann Michael
Haydn
Franz Liszt started his career as a
concert pianist at the age of eight
years at the Eisenstadt residence,
where he performed a concert
for a hunting party of Prince
Nikolaus I Esterházy.
During a trip to his home and to Budapest in 1840 he visited an old
friend of his father's, the Princely Councillor Ludwig Hofer, at his home
in Oberberg (memorial plaque on the house at Esterházystraße 36).
Eight years later, Liszt and his lover Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein visited
Father Albach at the Eisenstadt Fransiscan monastery, whom he dedicated one of his masses to (Mass for Male Voices or Father
Albach Mass).
EISENSTADT
CITY OF

Franz Liszt's father was employed by the Esterházy family. His grandfather, Georg Adam List, was a schoolmaster, community secretary and
cantor in St. Georgen. In 1974, he married Barbara Weninger from
St. Georgen.
(1737, Rohrau - 1806, Salzburg)
Joseph Haydn Mausoleum
Haydn spent his last years at his
house in Vienna, where he died
on 31 May, 1809. He was laid
to rest in the Haydn Mausoleum
in the Hill Church.
During his lifetime, Johann Michael Haydn was as famous a
composer as his older brother Joseph who was more acclaimed by far in his afterlife. Despite significant differences the
careers of the Haydn brothers in principle showed many parallels: What the Esterházy Princes were to Joseph, Salzburg's
Prince Archbishops were to Michael. During the years
Michael spent in Salzburg his professional portfolio was not
limited to sacred music but covered the entire range of vocal
and instrumental music.
