Haydn had a court appointment at the palace of the Esterhazy family in Vienna
Haydn’s job was to compose music for special occasions.
He was not allowed to show his music to anyone else.
He was not allowed to retire without permission.
After he worked for 15 years, the Esterhazy’s gave Haydn a new contract, which gave him new
freedoms, like…
Haydn was allowed to travel and write music for other people and places. Out of all the places he
visited the most important was the city of London.
Haydn’s death and a coincidence:
It was in May of 1809, while Haydn was in bed dying, that Napoleon captured the city of Vienna.
Out of respect for Haydn, Napoleon had guards placed at Haydn’s door, so he could die in peace.
