Review Sheet Fifth Grade Music Test Coming! Mary Bryan fifth-graders will take a written test in music class during the week of October 30th to November 5th. If a student is absent that day, then the student will take it at the next music class. If the class does not come to music that week, the test will be given the following week. Students need to know the following information. Some of this information is a review from fourth grade. Music Vocabulary and Symbols (We have had the words before, but not the symbols.) “Crescendo” (get louder): “Decrescendo” (get quieter): “Accent” (a sound which is suddenly loud): “Piano” (quiet) “Mezzo-piano” (medium-quiet) “Forte” (loud) “Mezzo-forte” (medium-loud) “Pianissimo” (very quiet) “Fortissimo” (very loud) “Xylophone” A musical instrument from the percussion family, with bars made of wood. Music Notation I would still like the students to know the names of the notes on the staff. Here they are: Also, I would like 5th graders to review these rhythm names, and know how many beats they get. Quarter note (gets one beat): Eighth note (half of one beat): Two eighth notes (together, they add up to one beat): Half note (two beats): Whole note (four beats): Music History I would like the students to know the following information about composer Franz Joseph Haydn: a) He was from Austria (not Australia), just like Mozart. Franz Joseph Haydn b) He is known as the “Father of the Symphony.” (1732-1809) c) A symphony is a piece of music written for an orchestra to play. d) One of his most famous symphonies was called the “Surprise Symphony.” e) As a boy, he was expelled from school, for cutting off another boy’s pigtail. f) When Beethoven was a young man, Haydn was his teacher.
