CHEAP DINOSAURS
Cheap Dinosaurs are an experimental rock and audio/visual project from Philadelphia, PA. Combining
gritty, instrumental math-rock with colorful sound synthesis, Cheap Dinosaurs create psychedelic
soundscapes that are deeply catchy and engaging. Featuring bright melodies and dark atmospheric
passages, Influences include the synth-heavy film soundtracks of Tangerine Dream, the melodic and
dancy sound of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the experimental rock stylings of groups like Battles and
Lightning Bolt. Cheap Dinosaurs offer a unique musical experience, rooted in engaging movements that
blur the lines between many genres.
Created by lead composer and keyboardist Dino Lionetti in 2006, Cheap Dinosaurs began as a solo
project using a Nintendo Game Boy and Nord Lead synthesizer. Joined by fellow ex-Chromelodeon
members Danny Tarng and Patrick Todd in 2008, the lineup expanded to include live guitar and drums.
During the creation of their self-titled album in 2009, guitarist and chiptune veteran and Joey Mariano
(animal-style) joined the group as a permanent member. In 2011 Cheap Dinosaurs joined Data Garden,
a Philadelphia-based record label and arts journal to rerelease their self-titled album on digital download
and plantable seed paper. 2011 also promoted the growth of Cheap Dinosaurs into a six-piece ensemble
with the addition of chiptune artists Paul Weinstein (chipocrite) and Daniel Davis (an0va) on bass and
additional guitar, respectively. Weinstein and Davis first worked with the group to record Autoscroll, a
dedicated video game music tribute, in early 2012. United by a passion for synthesis, Cheap Dinosaurs
continue to push the boundaries of the chiptune medium to create an experience unlike any other.
Data Garden, on Cheap Dinosaurs S/T:
Composed on a Nintendo gameboy rigged with a sequencing cartridge, the album expertly moves from
jazzy bit-scapes to algorithmic grooves that are equally suited for adventure, research- and romance.
The suite of nine songs are at once challenging and rewarding, propelling Cheap Dinosaurs own brand of
chip-music to the forefront of experimental pop.
Joshua Kopstein, originalsoundversion.com:
From singalong favorites (familiar to those who have seen the group play at MAGFest) like “Tagalog”
and “Stroll” to the surprising polyrhythms and crooning ambience of lesser-known tracks like “Cup”
and “Beech,” Cheap Dinosaurs' debut sports 9 synth-heavy progressive jams that twist like the limbs of a
tree branch and itch like poison oak.
Peter Crimmins, newsworks.org interview:
Cheap Dinosaurs is made up of giants in the local "chip-music" scene. The small sub-genre of electronic
music uses sounds generated by old video games.
