Tan Dun Dazzles with Martial Arts Trilogy at The Venetian Macao Renowned composer and guest musicians wow crowd at Venetian Theatre (Macao, Dec. 9, 2014) – Acclaimed Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun led the Macao Orchestra and three guest musicians through his magnificent Tan Dun Martial Arts Trilogy at The Venetian Theatre Tuesday night. The unique concert was held in collaboration with the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government (ICM) and the Macao Orchestra as part of Sands China’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region. It was the first time violinist Jue Yao, cellist Amedeo Cicchese and pianist Jessie Chang performed together with the Macao Orchestra, delivering a musical treat for the crowd. The combined audio-visual spectacular featured the performance of three concertos, each coming from a different martial arts movie that Tan had composed the soundtrack for: “Hero” for violin and guqin, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for cello and double erhu and “The Banquet” for piano and chorus. Scenes from each film were projected on a big screen as the orchestra played the score live. The combination heightened the impact of the music and put each piece into context for the audience, to allow them to fully appreciate the drama of the scores. The crowd clearly enjoyed the epic pieces, showing its gratitude with an enthusiastic and prolonged ovation. “Macao is a city with stories, and it is such a good fit for us to perform here since we are trying to deliver stories through music,” Tan said. “It was a pleasure to work with the talented musicians as well as the Macao Orchestra in the concert at The Venetian Theatre; they were remarkable.” Page 1 of 5 “The Macao Orchestra is honoured to have been conducted by the legendary Tan Dun,” said Ka Wong, Marketing Manager from the Macao Orchestra. “Collaborations like this not only elevate our musicianship to a higher level, but also give us an incredible experience to work with the best in the industry.” Known throughout the world, Tan has won dozens of awards, including a Grammy and an Oscar for his score for the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” He has led the world’s most prestigious orchestras and is a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Tan has composed works for world famous virtuosos including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Lang Lang, and he was commissioned by the International Olympic Committee to write the logo music and award ceremony music for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
