Jazz Royalty Reign at Esplanade’s Mosaic Music Series
Esplanade’s Mosaic to celebrate musical greats,
deepen audience appreciation and inspire local music community
SINGAPORE, 17 July 2014 – Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay’s Mosaic Music Series
returns this August with a trio of critically-acclaimed international jazz masters – each of
whom has been pivotal in defining their art form. Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval; pianist and
keyboardist Herbie Hancock, and guitarist Pat Metheny will perform at the Esplanade
Concert Hall between August 2014 and October 2014 at this year’s Mosaic Music Series.
The three artists, who have won more than 40 Grammy Awards between them, set the tone
for future Mosaic concerts. With a focus on musical virtuosity and artistry, the series will
feature leading musicians from a range of genres – celebrating not only mature, established
artists but also younger ones who are pushing musical boundaries.
Apart from presenting world-renowned artists, the Series also aims to give Singapore
audiences deeper insights into the musicians and their art. Complementing the Series will be
“listening parties” talks interspersed with music that give additional context on the musicians,
their contemporaries, and the music landscapes in which they grew up and ultimately
evolved. These events are aimed at audiences who want to deepen their appreciation and
knowledge of the music.
Singapore pianist, organist and composer Chok Kerong will host a listening party centred on
Herbie Hancock. Held on 30 August at the Esplanade Bay Room, the session will trace
Hancock’s growth as an artist, demonstrate his musical prowess and examine the impact he
made on jazz.
The Series also seeks to bring together Singapore musicians with visiting international artists
who are leaders in their genre. Future installations of the Series will include workshops and
masterclasses as well as commissions and collaborative projects.

Series Line-up
Esplanade’s Mosaic Music Series 2014 will feature:

Arturo Sandoval: performing on 27 August, Sandoval is a Cuban jazz trumpeter,
pianist and composer. A protégé of music icon Dizzy Gillespie, he went on to gain
international acclaim as one of the first musicians to bring Latin influences into
American jazz when he performed at the 1978 Newport Jazz Festival with Irekere
– a jazz super-group he co-founded.
Sandoval has won 10 Grammy, one Emmy and six Billboard awards. Lauded for
his virtuosic technical ability, he has worked with a wide spectrum of musicians
and groups including Frank Sinatra, Justin Timberlake, and the London
Symphony Orchestra; a true testament to his versatility across all music forms.

Herbie Hancock: performing on 9 September, Hancock is an icon of modern
music. A pianist, arranger, composer and bandleader, Hancock is known to boldly
explore and transcend limitations and genres, having played an integral role in
every popular music movement since the 1960s. Part of the Miles Davis Quintet,
which pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, Hancock was a significant
influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B traditions.
He has clinched 14 Grammy awards including Album of the Year in 2008 for
River: The Joni Letters, and two Grammy awards in 2011 for The Imagine Project.
Today, Hancock is the Creative Chair for Jazz with the Los Angeles Philharmonic
Orchestra, and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

Pat Metheny: performing on 27 October, Metheny is a jazz guitarist and
composer known for his versatility and a progressive approach to music making.
Metheny last performed in Singapore at Mosaic Music Festival in 2006. His
trademark sound involves modern improvisation rooted in the jazz tradition of
melody, swing and the blues.
Throughout his career, Metheny has continued to re-define the genre by
incorporating new technology, constantly working to evolve the improvisational
and sonic potential of his instrument. He has also been instrumental in the
development of several new guitar models such as the soprano acoustic guitar,
the 42-string Pikasso guitar, Ibanez's PM-100 jazz guitar, and a variety of other
custom instruments. He has won 20 Grammy awards and has spent most of his
life on tour, averaging between 120 and 240 shows a year since 1974.

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval emerged from
Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, to become a 10-time Grammy
Award winner and six-time Billboard Award winner.
Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to
catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most
acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical
artist, pianist and composer.
The founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, Sandoval is one of the
most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time. He has been seen by millions at the
Oscars performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy Awards with Justin Timberlake and in
his own right as a leader, and also performed at the Billboard Awards with Alicia Keys.
His versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody
Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank
Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart, Josh Groban and Alicia Keys, amongst many others.

Now in the fifth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has
always been—at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music.
In addition to being recognised as a legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock has
been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960s. As a member of the
Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new
approaches on his own recordings.This was followed by his work in the ’70s—including the
record-breaking album Headhunters—that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an
innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music.
Hancock received an Academy Award for his film score for Round Midnight and a staggering
14 Grammy Awards, which includes Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters and two
2011 Grammy Awards for his globally collaborative album The Imagine Project. Many of
Hancock’s compositions including Canteloupe Island, Maiden Voyage, Watermelon Man and
Chameleon have become modern standards.
Hancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association
and as Institu te Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He is a founder of The
International Committee of Artists for Peace (ICAP), and was recently awarded the
Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by French Prime Minister Francois Fillon. In 2011,
Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

Herbie Hancock’s influence on music is immense. Admired for his prowess as a
pianist, prolificacy as a composer and overall relentless pursuit of artistic growth and
expansion, his body of work contains the best of every subgenre of jazz imaginable, from
straightahead acoustic jazz with his own groups and the second Miles Davis Quintet and
groundbreaking forays into funk to his recent projects which saw him collaborating with
artists from the pop world. This talk and music listening session will trace Hancock’s growth

CHOK KERONG BIO
Chok Kerong was the first jazz musician to be awarded the National Arts Council’s Overseas
Arts Scholarship in 2008. Since graduating from the Manhattan School of Music with a
Master’s degree in jazz performance, he has developed into a striking pianist, organist and
composer whose work exhibits a keen intellect combined with emotional depth. His music
has been described as being “permeated with texture and a rich sonic colour palette”
(criticaljazz.com) and “no-nonsense jazz pulled like taffy from the sticky pot of 1960’s classic
jazz celebrity” (lajazz.com).
Kerong is much sought-after in the music community. Highlights include performing with
renowned names in jazz such as Steve Wilson and John Riley, writing arrangements for
T’ang Quartet, and composing for vocalist Rani Singam. He is also an integral part of singersongwriter Charlie Lim’s Mothership, regularly performing rock/soul/hiphop/pop hybrids to
sold-out crowds.
