Kevin Keating – Instructor Spotlight
Kevin started his karate training in February 2005 at the age of
47. Although a late starter he achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt in
November 2009. Finally, six years later under the instruction of
Sensei Joe Edmonds and Sensei John Glasgow, he has now
achieved the level of 2nd Dan Black Belt.

The SSK would like to share with you some more of Kevin’s
achievements and an insight into some of his memorable
moments.

Kevin Edward John
Keating was born in
Harrow, London, on the
16th June 1957 to John
(Johnny) Keating and
Emma Keating nee
Robert, both natives of
Edinburgh. Not long after
Kevin’s birth the family
moved back to Edinburgh,
hence Kevin's avid
support for Hibernian FC.

Kevin’s father John (Johnny) Keating was a household name in
the 1950s/60s. A world renowned composer,
arranger and song writer, John worked
with many well known artists such as,
Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby, Sammy
Davis Jr, Lita Rosa, Shani Wallis,
Adam Faith, Petula Clark
and Anthony Newley.
He arranged many of his
own hits including the
theme from the TV hit show
Z Cars (Everton football
clubs theme tune) amongst
many others.
John (Johnny) Keating

When Kevin was 8 years old, the family moved to Los Angeles
due to Johns work. John wrote the score for the film “Hotel”,
The Jean Arthur Show, an album with Carmen Mc Rae, the 11
minute Chevrolet Auto advert, plus many more.
The Family returned to Edinburgh when Kevin was 10 years
Old, then finally moving back to London when he turned 13.
Kevin first picked up the guitar at the age of 13 and performed
his first professional gig aged 15 at the Cork City Film Festival
backing Peter Gilmore, Honor Blackman and Patrick Allen.
He spent many years travelling
Europe and the Far East with the
family band “The Keatings”.
Kevin is a composer, arranger and
songwriter in his own right. He also
has many credits and has worked
with many famous artists and
musicians such as Bill Tarmey
(aka Jack Duckworth of
Coronation Street) on his Album
“In My Life” in 2003; Alan Price
(Animals) on his Album “Based on a true Story”
Gerard Kenny, writer of “New York, New York!” (they named it
twice) and Minder theme album “Coming Home”.
Other credits are hits
from the Band,
Innocence, a ‘90s dance
album, American soul
band ‘Pieces of a Dream’
etc. He also worked with
The Oxford City
Orchestra on “Westside
Story”,London Symphony
Orchestra and the British
Philharmonic Jazz Group.

Kevin has played in many West End shows such as “The Rat
Pack”, “Dancing in the Street” and in 2008 the hit Musical
“Zorro” written and produced by The Gypsy Kings.
He is credited as the main guitarist on the “Zorro” soundtrack
album.
Kevin plays in many top jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott's,
100 Club and The Bulls Head in Barnes.
Kevin is honoured to be the guitar teacher at the world famous
Brit School of Performing Arts and the London Music School at
Hackney which have produced between them stars such as
Adele, Amy Winehouse, Jessie Jay, Leona Lewis and The
Hoosiers. Many of Kevin's students have gone on to achieve
Grade 8 in guitar both Classical
and Rock under his tuition and
many are now professional
musicians. He has taught at the
Brit School and the London
Music School for 15 years each
and is very popular with
students. The London Music
School is owned by Martin
Keating, Kevin’s brother and
musical partner.

Kevin's recent stage work has seen him play in Theatres all
over Britain with Shows such as
“The Magic of Motown” and
“Soul Legends” where he backs
many famous Artists such as Jacki
Graham, Rose Royce, Eddie
Holman, Gwen Dickey, Kenny
Thomas and the American band
Heatwave.
Kevin is a versatile guitarist and plays all styles. One of his
passions is classical guitar which he performed at many
concerts on the cruise ships QE2 and SSCanberra.
He enjoys studying classical guitar and has achieved an ATCL
(Associate of Trinity College London). He is currently studying
for his LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London).

Kevin is also very passionate about Karate and enjoys studying
the martial arts. He trains regularly with his three children,
Callum, (also a musician) Kevin Jr. and daughter Emma who
achieved her 1St Dan Black Belt in December 2015.
The SSK are proud of Kevin and his family's achievements. We
wish him continued success and happiness for the future.
