Susan Milan After a high profile orchestral position as Principal Flute
of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Susan’s career has developed as soloist,
chamber musician and recitalist, with performances throughout UK, USA, East
Asia and Europe. In 2010 international performances included USA, China,
Hong Kong, Japan and South Africa. She is regularly featured on BBC radio
and Classic FM, and has recorded a broad repertoire for Chandos, Hyperion,
Upbeat, Da Capo, Omega, Denon, Cala and Metier labels. Her interest in and
support of contemporary music has led to many commission and premieres
of works by leading living composers and a CD of British contemporary works
was recently released on the Metier label. As a Professor and Fellow of the
Royal College of Music, Susan is a dedicated teacher and much in demand to
give master classes during her tours abroad. Her passion for chamber music
inspired her to found the Charterhouse International Music Festival for
outstanding young musicians in 2006. In 2011 the Debussy Ensemble will
release a recording of Debussy, Bax, Mathias and Ravel.
Nicholas Ward was born in Manchester to musician parents who were
both members of the Halle Orchestra under Sir John Barbirolli. He began
learning the violin at the age of eight. As a mature student at the Royal
Northern College of Music, he studied violin under Vilmos Schummy, Rudolf
Botta and Yossi Zivoni, as well as studying chamber music with Terence
Weil. He then moved to Brussels and spent a year studying with another
Hungarian, Andre Gertier. Nicholas joined the Royal Philharmonic orchestra
under Antal Dorati and also became a member of the Melos Ensemble of
London, playing with such distinguished musicians as Hugh Maguire, Cecil
Aronowitz and Terence Weil. In 1984 he became co-leader of the City of
London Sinfonia, while at the same time taking up a position as Music
Director of the Manchester-based Northern Chamber Orchestra. In 1999 he
was appointed leader of the CLS. He has directed over 30 CD recordings,
including a well-reviewed series of Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn
symphonies, and several chamber music and solo recordings. Nicholas is a
founder member of the Instrumental Quintet of London, exploring exotic
and fascinating repertoire for flute, string trio and harp.
Christopher Jepson
After studying at the Royal College of Music
with Professor Alexander Boyarsky, Christopher Jepson continued his
studies at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, under Professor
Hans-Jakob Eschenburg. Following his studies, he became a member of the
Deutsche Symphony Orchestra, Berlin, where he remained for two years. He
has recently been appointed Stellevertreter Solo Cello in the
Sinfonieorchester Basel. He also plays as guest principal cello in Orchestras
across Europe including the Gurzenich Orchester, Koln, Deutsches Kammer
Symphony, Berlin, and Camerata Nordica, Sweden. He has recently given
duo recitals in Europe and chamber concerts in Asia with the Milan Trio, as
well as giving master classes in the China Conservatory for Music, Beijing.
Andrew Ball
was born in Southampton, and won scholarships to
Queen's College, Oxford, where he read music, and to the Royal College of
Music, where he studied with Kendall Taylor. Since his London debut at the
Wigmore Hall he has performed a hugely varied repertoire to great acclaim,
with a passionate advocacy of twentieth century music. He has given the
premieres of works by composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Benedict Mason,
Martin Butler and John Woolrich. He has studied the sonatas of Sir Michael
Tippett with the composer, and has performed the complete cycle in
Hamburg, London and at the Dartington Summer School. He has made
countless broadcasts for the BBC and in February 1997 he gave the
premiere of a new solo work, 'Children at a funeral', by James Wood. In
chamber music, he has preformed and recorded with numerous duos, the
Milan Trio, London Sinfonietta and other leading ensembles. He is a
Professor of piano at the Royal College of Music, where he also takes a class
in 20th century piano music.
Ieuan Jones left the RCM in 1985 with all the awards including Tagore
Gold Medal and the Queen Mother’s Rose Bowl for the student who gave the
most credit to the College in that year. Also in the same year he was the
winner at the Royal Over Seas League Competition... the last time for the
harp to win the competition. Since then, he has toured the world as a solo
harpist. He has played in over 25 countries taking delight in presenting
unusual programmes on the harp and has recorded many solo, chamber
and concerto works. He joined the Instrumental Quintet of London and the
Debussy Ensemble in 2005 and in 2010 will record for the Metier label the
outstanding trio repertoire for this combination of instruments. Ieuan is
now Professor of Harp at the Royal College of Music.
Matthew Jones is an accomplished violist, violinist and composer. He
studied Mathematics at the Universities of Warwick and Bologna, Italy,
graduating with one of the highest first class marks of his year, before
being awarded a Senior Exhibition to study at the Royal College of Music. As
a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique and Kundalini Yoga Matthew
gives courses abroad and at the Royal College of Music, Trinity College of
Music and Berkley School of Music in Boston. His Duo with the pianist
Michael Hampton has emerged as one of the most successful viola duos in
the world and has recently performed in the Purcell Room, St. Martin-in-theFields, Blackheath Halls, the CBSO Centre, Birmingham, the new Wales
Millennium Centre and venues in France and Italy, as well as live on BBC
Radio 3. He performs in UK and throughout the world as a soloist and as a
chamber musician with the Instrumental Quintet of London and the Debussy
Ensemble which will release its first CD early in 2011.
Sebastian Comberti
was born in London. He studied in Italy with
Amedeo Baldovino and later with Derek Simpson and Sidney Griller at the
Royal Academy of Music. He was a founder member of the Bochmann Quartet
until 1983 when he became principal cello with the London Mozart Players.
He plays with a number of chamber groups including the Instrumental
Quintet of London, Trio Goya and Divertimenti. A keen interest in historically
informed performance has resulted in participation with a great many of
London’s period instrument groups, appearing as principal cello and soloist
with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Hanover Band. As a
member of several chamber groups he has recorded for CRD, EMI, Harmonia
Mundi, Hyperion, Meridian, Phoenix and RCA and CPO. In April 2001
Sebastian Comberti founded the CD label Cello Classics, devoted to
recordings of rare repertoire and artists, himself releasing several CDs of
sonatas by Boccherini, Stephen Paxton and early 19th Century works with
fortepiano, and concertos by Haydn and Zumsteeg.
