Are you looking for “unique CE in a unique setting?” Attend the 2015 Northwoods Education Event at
Hiawatha Lodge in Eagle River, WI, and look no further! The Hiawatha Lodge Inn is located on the Eagle
River Chain of Lakes and includes a spacious lobby with an aquarium, LCD TV and fireplace, a sunny rec
room that includes pool and ping pong tables, lots of outdoor tables and seating, and refreshingly large
sleeping rooms. The Eagle River area offers many opportunities including fishing, hunting, golfing, hiking,
biking, and shopping.
Eight hours of quality continuing education are offered at this year’s event. A lineup of four top-notch
speakers will present excellent CE, and speakers include: Dr. Gerald Clarke, OptiVision - Fox Valley; Drs.
Jennifer Unger and Michael Vrabec, Valley Eye Associates - Appleton and Oshkosh; and Dr. Thomas
Harvey, TLC Laser Eye Centers - Eau Claire.
Dr. Clarke will kick things off on Friday morning with lectures covering a corneal cross-linking, intacts, and
i-stent, and the day will conclude with Dr. Jennifer Unger providing attendees an update on glaucoma.
Saturday morning will feature an update on corneal refractive surgery by Dr. Vrabec, followed by new IOL
techniques, ocular surface disease treatment, and glaucoma meds by Dr. Harvey.
The education schedule will remain as usual, with two hours Friday morning and evening and four hours on
Saturday morning. On Friday and Saturday, a continental breakfast will be served, along with hors d'oeuvres
during Friday evening’s education session. Whether you like to fish, golf, or just enjoy a fall walk in the north
woods, this unique WOA CE seminar is perfect for you.
Accommodations consist of motel rooms priced at $80 for Thursday evening and $90 for Friday or Saturday
evening (plus 10% tax). To make reservations, please call the lodge at 715-479-4442 and let them know you
are with the Wisconsin Optometric Association. You will need to provide your contact information and a credit
card. Check out the lodge at www.hialodge.com. All reservations must be made no later than September
10, and rooms will not be guaranteed at the group rate after this date.

Gerald Clarke, M.D. (2 hours OP)
“Corneal Cross-Linking & Intacts”
The treatment of ectatic corneal disease has dramatically changed with these two modalities, with deference of
corneal transplant in over 80% of cases.
“I-Stent”
This shunting procedure has decreased drop usage in post-cataract glaucoma patients by 75%.
6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Jennifer Unger, M.D. (2 hours GL)
“Glaucoma Update”
This course will discuss the epidemiology of glaucoma in terms of the characteristics of those who get it and how
common it is. Proper evaluation of patients will be discussed, along with pressure and aqueous humor dynamics.
Open angle, angle closure, and childhood glaucoma will be discussed. Medical management strategies as well
as laser and incisional surgery co-management will be covered as well.
Saturday, October 10

Michael Vrabec, M.D. (2 hours OP)
“Corneal Refractive Surgery Update”
This course will cover iDesign, the new Visx custom LASIK procedure, and co-management strategies for optometrists. Acufocus, the first FDA approved intra-corneal inlay for presbyopia, will also be discussed. Finally, the
expanded family of lenses with the Tecnis Multifocal Intraocular Lens will be covered.

“New IOL Calculation Techniques: Abnormal Eyes Need Not Apply”
Refractive outcome data from a series of premium cataract patients will be reviewed. Emphasis on modern calculation techniques, developing IOL selection strategies, and co-management requirements will also be reviewed. The attendee will appreciate the challenges of IOL selection and enhancement options if targets are
missed.
“Ocular Surface Disease Treatment: Get A Lot While You Are Young”
Basic ocular surface physiology will be reviewed. Emphasis on treatment strategies involving anti-inflammatory
therapy will be discussed. Natural aging processes for ocular surface and eyelids will be highlighted by using examples of infrared images, point-of-care diagnostics, and traditional low-technology testing.
“Why I Don’t Like Glaucoma Drops”
Glaucoma medications will be reviewed. Side effect profiles of various medications will be discussed. Nonscalpel (i.e. laser) treatments as well as micro-incision surgical options (e.g. iStent) will be highlighted. Patient
follow up recommendations as well as co-management pitfalls will be emphasized.

Gerald Clarke, M.D.
Gerald Clarke, M.D., a board certified
ophthalmologist, received his undergraduate degree from the University of
Notre Dame. He graduated first in his
class from Loyola University School of
Medicine. After completing his residency
at Milwaukee’s Eye Institute, he founded Ophthalmic Surgery of Wisconsin in
Oshkosh and partnered with OptiVision
surgeon Dr. Stephen Dudley in 2004.
Dr. Clarke is a pioneer in his field. He performed the first Radial Keratotomy in Wisconsin. He has performed thousands of LASIK laser
vision correction procedures as well. Dr. Clarke is a national leader in
the field of cataract surgery. He and Dr. Dudley were the very first in
the area to perform Laser Enhanced High Def Cataract Surgery and
develop a “No Drops/No Hassle” intra-ocular medication delivery
system.
Jennifer Unger, M.D.
Dr. Unger is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of
San Francisco State University and Alpha
Omega Alpha graduate of Loma Linda
University School of Medicine in Southern
California. During her medical school studies, she was a mentor to newer students,
providing tutoring services in both physiology and statistics. A California native, she
moved to Wisconsin in 2003 to continue
her medical and surgical training in ophthalmology at the Eye Institute (MCW) in
Milwaukee.
After completing her ophthalmology residency in 2007 and becoming
Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), Dr.
Unger has continued to practice in Wisconsin, joining Valley Eye
Associates in 2015. Her experience includes medical, surgical, and
laser techniques for the treatment of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease,
macular degeneration, cataracts, and a host of other comprehensive

Dr. Thomas Harvey is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and licensed in Wisconsin. He
performs a wide variety of refractive procedures and has expertise in laser vision correction, incisional astigmatism reduction,
