He completed ophthalmology residency training at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, and fellowship training in Corneal Diseases and Refractive Surgery at Emory University. He also earned a PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics. As part of the PhD research, Dr. Huang co-invented optical coherence tomography (OCT), a high-resolution cross-sectional imaging technology that is now indispensable in the diagnosis of eye diseases. His PhD research also included development of femtosecond lasers, which are now widely used in corneal and refractive surgery. He is one of a very few doctors with deep understanding of laser surgery from both a clinical and engineering perspective. Dr. Huang is well known for his research and teaching in refractive surgery, laser and imaging technologies. He leads the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers (www.COOLLab.net). The National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded him four research grants totaling over eight million dollars. He has produced over 70 scientific articles and book chapters, 8-patented inventions and 2 books. He has taught 19 instruction courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and delivered 99 conference presentations and 44 invited lectures. Majid Moshirfar, MD, FACS, FACE Dr. Moshirfar is a professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF Department of Ophthalmology. He is currently co-director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division, director of Proctor/UCSF Fellowship in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery and associate medical director of Beckman Vision Institute at UCSF Medical Center. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Illinois Eye and Ear Hospital in Chicago Illinois where he graduated as the sole recipient of the outstanding resident clinical ward. He completed a two-year fellowship with great emphasis on cornea/external disease, refractive surgery, and anterior segment reconstruction at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah where he had been practicing for the last 16 years. Dr. Moshirfar specializes in LASIK, LASEK, PRK, Phakic intraocular lenses, Intacs, Collagen Cross-Linking as well as corneal transplantation, keratoprosthesis (artificial cornea), management of difficult corneal disorders, complicated cataract extraction, keratoconus, infectious eye diseases and other complex procedures of the cornea and anterior segment of the eye. Dr. Moshirfar has played a leading role in the development and dissemination of these procedures, particularly in the area of challenging refractive surgery techniques. Dr. Moshirfar has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals. Mitchell P. Weikert, M.D., M.S.
