In a world full of “trends” and “flavors of the month,” the
latest high-tech products often lead a very short life. But don’t
take my word for it, plug a video into your VCR, if it hasn’t
been replaced with a DVD player, and notice the styles and
products from the last 10 or 20 years. For example, mobile
phones the size of a shoe, televisions with curved screens, and of course, VCRs. Is
life better with a “boom-box” on your shoulder, or an “iPod” in your shirt pocket?

However, some products do stand
the test of time and are truly breakthroughs in technology. Such is the case
with digital hearing aids. Since the early
success of digitally programmable technology in the early ‘90s to the introduction of 100% digital in 1996, digital
hearing aids have provided patients and
audiologists with significant features,
benefits, and continued advancements
over the old analog hearing aids.
Perhaps the greatest feature of
digital technology is the ability to
perform multiple functions automatically, efficiently, and simultaneously in
the blink of the eye. The newest
generation of digital hearing aids gives
us the capability of differentiating
between speech and noise. This has
been clinically proven. Another benefit
derived from control and management
of sound is the elimination of feedback
or the “whistling” noise many users
experience with old technology hearing
aids. Today’s digital hearing aids also
come with speech-enhancing capabilicontinued inside Digital Age

Recent research indicates that there may be a direct
connection between hearing loss and memory loss.
Researchers at Volen National Center for Complex
Systems at Brandeis University compared the memory
capabilities of adults with normal hearing to that of
adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. Their
findings were reported by Arthur Wingfield, Ph.D., in
Current Directions in Psychological Science, Vol. 14, No.3.
In the study, subjects were asked to listen to a list of 15
words and then repeat the last three words in the list. The
subjects with hearing loss consistently had difficulty repeating the two words preceding the final word. The
researchers hypothesized that the hearing-impaired listeners had to concentrate so hard on their hearing that their
actual processing and memory of the words suffered or
lacked recollection.

The latest advancement in
digital hearing technology is a device
that measures sound levels as an
individual goes about day-to-day
activities. It is a new process in
fitting hearing aids known as datalogging, and it’s revolutionizing
the industry. Data is measured by a
sophisticated process in the hearing
aid. The hearing aid measures the
percentage of time spent in specific
sound environments such as traffic
noise, conversation, in addition to
clearer picture of your lifestyle;
listening situations you encounter
on an average day. The information
gathered gives your audiologist a
better understanding of the sound
environments you live in and situations you experience that pose a
hearing difficulty. The end result is

Introducing
Noemi Acosta, Administrative Assistant
When you visit Audiology and Hearing Center‘s Civic
Center office, you’ll be met with a warm greeting and a
friendly smile from Noemi, the new administrative assistant.
Her extensive background in customer service is the perfect
addition to AHAC where customer service is everything.
“I’ve always loved customer service,” she explains, “and years of retail
helped me strengthen those skills.” She continued, “I went to school for
a career in the medical field where I could apply those skills on a daily
basis. What really makes me happy is when a patient experiences better
hearing and, most importantly, an improved quality of life.”
Noemi has lived in Arizona for 5 years and continues to work on her
nursing degree at Gateway College. Originally from Pomona, California, she
likes the Arizona desert but feels it’s missing one thing…”an ocean!”

in earlier stages of life, and an

few of the reasons for the increase
in hearing impairment.

ties that identify and enhance speech in group gatherings or one-on-one
conversation. If “communication is everything,” digital technology has
made it possible to communicate far more effectively.
The newest generation of digital hearing aids is becoming even more
high-tech. Over the past three generations of digital hearing advancements, about 10 years, we at Audiology and Hearing Aid Center have
found that by keeping our patients educated and up-to-date they have
become more informed hearing aid consumers. We believe that an
informed consumer is the best patient. Ask us about the new generation of

Our patients know that we only offer high quality
hearing aid products from state-of-the-art, international companies. One of our old favorites, Phonak
Hearing Systems, a Swiss company, recently developed
a line of highly advanced digital hearing aids.
Its top-of-line Savia™ hearing aid is among the most sophisticated we
have to offer. It holds bragging rights to 10 hearing aid “firsts,” including:
Sound Navigation, Real Ear Sound, EasyFM, EchoBlock and Dual WindNoise Management. These cutting-edge features may sound fancy and
complicated, but in actuality they add up to a more simplified, comfortable listening system for people with all types of hearing loss.
For those looking for a hearing aid that does not occlude or make the
ears feel plugged, Phonak has also recently introduced the microSavia™.
This stylish new open-ear, open-fit digital hearing aid is tiny, feather-light,
comfortable and elegant, yet makes no compromises in sound quality.
And finally, for the value-minded, Phonak now offers the Extra™. This
model has some of the same features as the Savia instrument but at a
lower, budget-conscious price. Call and ask us about Phonak’s new line of
savvy Savia hearing instruments!

received cochlear implants
• About 250,000 people are candidates
for cochlear implants
• Nearly 615,000 Americans have been
