Smaller than ever – more powerful than ever
In the same way the microchip revolutionised computers, wireless technology
is now revolutionising hearing aids and their accessories.
More and more technology these days is
becoming integrated and multipurpose.
How many of you have mobile phones
that are now also computers, cameras,
and personal organisers? Even some new
refrigerators can text you and let you know
when you need to shop for more milk!
It is becoming industry standard in mobile
phones to have wireless connectivity
(Bluetooth) to allow your mobile phone
to wirelessly connect to other electronic
devices – the hands-free headset in your car
is a great example.

dark and cold winter.
The advantage of these innovations is that
you now only need a few devices to do
many different things, and it’s better futureproofing; even if you don’t know how to use
half of the features on your mobile phone,
they are still built-in for the day in the future
when you might need it! Hearing aids are
following in the same path. It doesn’t cost

gets ready for a very
special family Christmas
loved ones by helping you hear mobile
phone conversations clearly in BOTH ears
at the same time, without even holding
the phone to your ear! Your phone can be
up to 10 metres away from you and you
still hear the conversation directly into
both ears. You can now drive in the car and
hear hands-free on the phone through the
hearing aids, and essentially hear the phone
more clearly – even over the road noise!
No buttons, no fiddling – just
seamless hearing, automatically.
Hearing aids are now compatible
with Bluetooth and the two aids can
communicate to each other. When there
are background noise situations – they
can give you stereo sound with speech
in BOTH ears simultaneously, in real time,
giving you considerably better listening in
background noise than ever before. So for
example, if you were sitting at a table in
a noisy restaurant with your wife and the
waitress comes over to tell you the specials,
the hearing aids would now pick out the
waitress’ voice and her voice would stream
into both ears simultaneously, whilst at the
same time the background noise from all
directions would be reduced. When your
wife starts talking, the aids then would pick
up her voice from the other side and also
send it to both ears at the same time.

Automatic or Manual – your choice.
Hearing aids are now fully automatic, but
they do have optional accessories to help
you wirelessly and effortlessly connect to
the world of sound around you, and to
hear your loved ones better. Sometimes
this would be a remote control (as small
as a mobile phone) to adjust the sound,
sometimes it would be a little box plugged
into the TV to hear the dialogue clearly,
sometimes it’s a small device to hear the
mobile phone in the car.
Wireless connection to the TV.
Another recent development is a wireless
accessory that sends a signal from a TV or
stereo directly to your hearing aids.
Gone are the days of having to turn the
TV up so loud it becomes uncomfortable
to everyone else in the room. Plus you can
still hear the conversation around you.
All levels of technology with the new wireless
generation of hearing aids – from the fancy
to the simple hearing aids - now all allow you
to connect to the computer, or the phone
or the mobile, or the TV or stereo without
complicated wires. The freedom to let you
effortlessly hear clearly again.

Season’s
Greetings!
There is something magical about
Northern Europe at Christmas. Christmas
markets, for example, with the requisite of
fragrant spices – ginger, clove, cinnamon,
nutmeg, cardamom, mace and pepper, have
always been festive ingredients. (Requiring
camels to trek across deserts and vessels
to carry them across oceans made spices
prohibitively expensive centuries ago – so they
were for special religious celebrations only.)
Gingerbread can be firm and crisp – the
Scots make a shortbread-like gingerbread from
oatmeal; thick and cakey – like the French
pain d’epices; or somewhere in between,
such as lebkuchen – German ginger cookies,
or pepparkakor – Swedish spice cookies.
The sugar and spice heritage of ginger
bread continues and is gaining momentum
here. Each year we can now purchase
gingerbread house kits to make ourselves.

WHANGAREI CLINIC:

Opposite Whangarei Intermediate School
This year, the Bennett family will all come
together for Christmas at Parua Bay. There
will be gingerbread cookies on the table
as, in Martha Stewart style, I have made a
centrepiece Christmas cake resembling a
typical northern hemisphere town square,
surrounded by an assemblage of houses.
Whilst this may appear complicated to
some, the ‘biscuit houses’ providing the border
are made from the same recipe as the biscuits.
Children can make the dough and roll it
out to cut a variety of shapes. These can then
be baked and iced with the ready-made royal
icing tubes you can buy at the supermarket.
It is a great project for children, to hang on the
tree, or wrap them individually as small gifts.

2 ¾ cups Flour
½ tsp Baking soda
2 tsp Ground ginger 2 tsp Cinnamon
½ cup Castor sugar 1 Egg
1 tsp Ground cardamom
125g Butter – room temperature
¾ cup Golden syrup
Hand-whisk together the flour,
baking soda and spices in a bowl. In a
separate bowl, beat butter and sugar with
a mixer on med-high speed until fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after
each addition. Beat in golden syrup.
Reduce speed to low and gradually add
in flour mixture until just incorporated.
Divide dough into three portions and
cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate
1 hour. Preheat oven to 180˚C.
On a lightly floured piece of baking
paper, roll out the dough. Put in the
freezer on a tray for 15 minutes – this
makes the cut shapes more defined and
easier to handle. Cut out the Christmas
shapes and place on a tray lined with
baking paper. Bake the cookies for 1215 minutes until crisp. Let them cool
on the tray or a wire rack. When cold,
ice with designs of your choice using
royal icing. Decorate if you wish.
NB: To achieve the contrasting colours,
simply divide the total mix into two
bowls when measuring out. For the dark
colour use brown sugar instead of castor
sugar and treacle instead of golden
syrup. Place a hole in the top (with a
skewer) before baking if you are going
to hang or tie a ribbon through.
Makes about 24 large biscuits.
