The commander of the
confederate is Henry h. Sibley
FACTS ABOUT HENRY H. SIBLEY

Sibley, Henry Hastings (1811–91) Union army
officer and governor, born in Michigan Territory.
Sibley was a fur trader, in the process becoming well
acquainted with local Indian tribes; he married a
Sioux woman, from whom he later separated. In
1848 he became active in Democratic party politics
and was elected a delegate to Congress from
Wisconsin; he represented Minnesota from 1849 to
1853 and in 1858 became its first governor. In 1862,
now a colonel of militia, he led troops to put down an
Indian uprising; his victory brought him promotion to
brigadier general in 1863. He then served in the
Dakota Territory, where he opened up new trails and
suppressed Indian unrest.

EVEN MORE FACTS ABOUT
HENRY
Henry Hastings Sibley was born in Detroit, Michigan, where his
parents, Solomon Sibley (1769–1846), a native of Sutton,
Massachusetts, and Sarah Whipple (Sproat) Sibley had moved
in 1797. It was part a major westward migration after the
American Revolutionary War by New Englanders. Solomon
Sibley became a prominent judge in the early history of the city
and state.
 As a young man, Henry Sibley "read" (studied) law in his
father's office to prepare for the bar and licensing.
 [edit] Career
 In 1828, the young Sibley started as a clerk at a mercantile
house in Sault Ste. Marie, a prominent fur trading center on
both the United States and Canadian sides. From 1829–1834,
he worked as a supply-purchasing agent of the American Fur
Company at Mackinac. In 1834, Sibley became a partner in the
company and relocated to their headquarters in St. Peter's (now
called Mendota), Minnesota. He lived there from 1834–1862

West Point, 1839. He fought in the Seminole War and in
the Mexican War. In the Civil War, Canby commanded the
Dept. of New Mexico, where he thoroughly repelled the
Confederate invasion (1862). He was made a brigadier
general of volunteers in Mar., 1862, and was on special
duty in the War Dept. in Washington from Jan., 1863, to
Mar., 1864, except for four months as the commander of
New York City during the draft riots of 1863. Canby was
promoted to major general in May, 1864, and assigned to
command the Military Division of West Mississippi. He
captured Mobile in Apr., 1865, and in May received the
surrender of the last Confederate armies. After the war
Canby held various commands in the South until 1870,
when he was sent to the Dept. of the Columbia on the
Pacific coast. He was killed during a peace conference
with the Modoc.

Description of the battle

Brig. Gen. Henry H. Sibley led his force of 2,500 men across the Rio
Grande River and up the east side of the river to the ford at Valverde,
north of Fort Craig, New Mexico, hoping to cut Federal communications
between the fort and military headquarters in Santa Fe. Union Col.
E.R.S. Canby left Fort Craig with more than 3,000 men to prevent the
Confederates from crossing the river. When he was opposite them,
across the river, Canby opened fire and sent Union cavalry over, forcing
the Rebels back. The Confederates halted their retirement at the Old
Rio Grande riverbed, which served as an excellent position. After
crossing all his men, Canby decided that a frontal assault would fail and
deployed his force to assault and turn the Confederate left flank. Before
he could do so, though, the Rebels attacked. Federals rebuffed a
cavalry charge, but the main Confederate force made a frontal attack,
capturing six artillery pieces and forcing the Union battle line to break
and many of the men to flee. Canby ordered a retreat. Confederate
reinforcements arrived and Sibley was about to order another attack
when Canby asked for a truce, by a white flag, to remove the bodies of
the dead and wounded. Left in possession of the battlefield, the
Confederates claimed victory but had suffered heavy casualties.
Although the Confederates would soon occupy Santa Fe, they would
have to leave New Mexico within four months.
