Your Child & Orthodontics
By age seven, most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult
teeth, which makes it easier for us to diagnose and correct
tooth and jaw problems sooner and without surgery. That’s why
the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an
orthodontic assessment around this age.
As a parent, it’s not always clear what to look for.
Here are some signs that we consider…
O Mouth breathing
O Finger or thumb sucking
O Difficulty chewing or biting food
O Early or late loss of baby teeth
O Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
O Jaws that pop or click when opening and closing
O Teeth that don’t come together or do so abnormally
O Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the face
O Crowded front teeth around age seven or eight
With early treatment, we can correct many problems
without surgery and ensure that your child’s permanent
teeth come in straight. Your child can have a healthy,
beautiful smile for the future!
Why Orthodontics Work For Children!
Dr. Cherry has treated extensive child cases from
beginning to end. This patient in particular, an 8 year old
boy, has completed the first phase of his treatment and was
a more complex case than most. During the first phase of
this patient’s treatment, Dr. Cherry’s goal was to correct
the skeletal discrepancy of the narrow upper arch and also
correct the cross bite that affected the function of the jaw;
all of which are very important to complete before moving
on to Phase two.
In order for Dr. Cherry to achieve this result, Phase one
treatment consisted of a palatal expander with protraction
head gear, followed by limited upper braces. Total time for
Phase one was 12 months.

wear them?
Well, that depends…
If your teen has received early
treatment, we can monitor the growth of
the jaw and only short-term treatment
may be required. If not, then the
length of time will be influenced by the
complexity of the problem that needs
correction and on how quickly your teen’s
body responds to treatment. 12 – 24
months is not unusual.
Here’s another crucial factor…
Your teen’s willingness to actually
use the appliances! Consistency plays
a major role in the length of time it takes to
complete treatment. It’s also important to
take care of braces and appliances – this
really does help make treatment shorter!

Adult Orthodontics
Forget everything you thought you knew
After many years of self-consciousness about a severe open bite
and numerous spaces, this patient, age 34, is delighted with a terrific
new smile. Dr. Cherry provided full treatment of both the upper and
lower arches using Damon® System Braces which differ from traditional
braces in that they utilize a “passive slide mechanism”, rather than
traditional brackets, and can provide a less complicated treatment for
adults. When undergoing straightening with Damon braces, you can
expect a gentler overall treatment, fewer appointments, and often
see full results in less time than traditional braces. In this case, the
treatment time was about 31 months.
As you can see, this was a very worthwhile time investment for our
patient who can not only eat and speak better than before, but can
work and socialize with absolute self-confidence!

Meet Dr. Cherry…
Dr. William Cherry has been
married for 31 years to Mary Beth,
his soul-mate. They settled in the
Lehigh Valley in 1990 because they
knew it would be a great place to
raise their three terrific children.
Dr. Cherry enjoys spending time
with his family and staying young with his three grandchildren. He is
active in his church community and also enjoys golf, music, theater, and
rooting for the IronPigs!
Dr. Cherry’s passion for helping others regain their self-esteem
through orthodontics came from his own life-changing experience with
orthodontics when he was a teenager. He has served and trained in
the US Air Force and teaches orthodontics to dentists. Dr. Cherry has
advanced postdoctoral education in leading-edge orthodontic techniques
and is active in numerous professional associations.
