of these achievements.
2
BACKGROUND
COCHRANE ORAL HEALTH GROUP
The Cochrane Oral Health Group (COHG) has an international membership of 1490 members, of which
over 860 are review authors from 42 countries. Our global panel of peer reviewers ensure our reviews
are both of high quality and clinically relevant, and our editorial board’s decision-making processes are
supported by 8 field-specific internationally expert panels of clinicians and researchers (Cleft lip and/or
palate; Dental public health; Operative and prosthodontic dentistry; Oral and maxillofacial surgery; Oral
medicine; Orthodontics; Paediatrics; Periodontology).
As of December 2014, COHG has 153 systematic reviews, 55 review updates and 60 protocols
published on the Cochrane Library, with further reviews and protocols in preparation and an additional
10 registered titles. Reviews on the Cochrane Library have an Impact Factor of 5.939 (2013).
Consequently, it is now ranked 10th of the 150 journals in the Medicine, General & Internal category and
the COHG’s Impact Factor is in the top 3 dental journals.
We have increased our collaboration and partnership working with international guideline
development groups and can demonstrate the impact of COHG reviews in reducing the duplication of
effort.
COHG GLOBAL ALLIANCE
Cochrane reviews are usually undertaken by enthusiastic individuals with some methodological help
from the editorial base. Due to increased commitments on clinicians’ and academics time, and more
complex research methods being introduced centrally by the Cochrane Collaboration, the COHG needed
to fundamentally change the way we support the profession. The Global Alliance was established to
enable an expert methodological and administrative team to support the conduct of priority reviews
ensuring their quality and timeliness.
Since 2011, we have received over £200,000 from Global Alliance partners to support this initiative.
This has enabled us to partially fund a senior systematic reviewer and research coordinator to support
the production of priority reviews, and significantly improve their methodological quality.
A consumer perspective is important to making the reviews assessable and the support received by the
GA is enabling the Group to expand its level of patient involvement and develop a strategy to engage
more globally. The COHG launched an evidence summaries section of the website for patients to use to
inform their decision-making. The first section is on tooth decay/caries, with other areas of concern
identified by the international public survey to be added in the near future.
PARTNER ORGANISATIONS
To date, the following organisations have pledged their support of COHG’s production of high quality
and clinically relevant systematic reviews by donating to the GA, either as a one-off sum, or a
commitment of several years:



British Orthodontic Society, UK (2011-2013)
Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd),
UK (2011-2013)
New York University College of Dentistry, USA
(2011-2013; 2014-2018)



British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, UK
(2011-2013)
National Center for Dental Hygiene Research
& Practice, USA (2012-2015)
Canadian Dental Hygienists Association,
Canada (2012)



British Association of Oral Surgeons, UK
(2013-2015)
British Society of Periodontology, UK (20132015)


Mayo Clinic, USA (2013-2014)
British Association for the Study of
Community Dentistry, UK (2014 -)
Initially, we asked GA partners for a commitment of 3-year funding to establish this initiative, and we
now realise that this funding is essential to the future success of the COHG. NIHR have committed new
funding from 2015 until 2020 (at the highest tier for UK review groups), which enables us to employ
editorial staff. The GA-funded senior systematic reviewer and research coordinator have contributed
greatly to the quality and productivity of our reviews. We ask, therefore, that GA partner organisations
extend their commitment to allow us to maintain the current review output.
All GA partners have been involved in determining the process and prioritisation of reviews, including
the opportunity to nominate representatives on the international expert panels. The process identifies
the most clinically important reviews in each field of dentistry to ensure editorial base resources are
focused upon regularly maintaining their evidence on the Cochrane Library considered important by a
clinically relevant international experts (to date numbering a total of 133 panel members, across 8
expert panels) and all relevant topic authors.
During 2014, the COHG undertook extensive prioritisation activities (across 6 areas of dentistry:
periodontology, operative (including endodontic) and prosthodontic dentistry, dental public health,
oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine, cleft lip and/or palate) to identify a core portfolio of
priority titles for the editorial base to maintain. The results of this were added to the previous
prioritisation processes (identical in methodology), conducted in 2011 (orthodontics) and 2013
(paediatric dentistry).
Discussions were supplemented by the addition of a small international patient survey to elicit areas of
concern for consumers, and the contribution of representatives from IADR’s Global Oral Health
Inequalities Research Network to ensure appropriate consideration to the global burden of oral disease.
The process identified 81 existing titles across 8 areas of dentistry as being priority for maintenance by
COHG, and a number of additional new priority titles to be developed by clinically and methodologically
experienced teams in due course (see Figure 1).
COHG will repeat the prioritisation process in 2017 to ensure the core portfolio is inclusive of newly
emerging interventions, trials and priority research. In the interim, COHG continues to consult the
expert panels for clinical guidance in registering any newly proposed titles, as and when required.

GA IMPACT UPON OUTPUT
At inception of the GA, after 15 years operation of the COHG, there was a total of 217 COHG publications
on The Cochrane Library (Sep 2010: 73 protocols; 111 new reviews; 33 updated reviews).
As of December 2014, an additional 134 publications have been added to The Cochrane Library
as a direct result of GA members’ support of COHG’s research activities.
The contribution of the GA is recognised on each supported publication (under External sources), with
all GA partners individually listed, as per text below:

As a consequence of GA support, the Cochrane Oral Health Group has:





PUBLISHED gold standard reviews;
PARTNERED diverse collaborators (both individual and organisations);
PRIORITISED globally important topics for dentistry;
PROMOTED evidence based care though presentations and informing new research; and
