Learn About Your Body Type, And How It Works
DR. CHRIS MOTLEY
1 Why Do You Need to Know About Body Types?
You need to understand your body type, because it helps you with your:
Food choices
: what foods you need to eat or consume for your type, which foods you
can be sensitive (allergic) to.
Weight balance
: how your type gains or loses weight.
Hormonal Balance
: which hormones are dominant in your type.
Exercise programs
: what types exercise help your unique body type build muscle and
strength.
Vitamin choices
: what vitamins your body type actually needs everyday to run your
metabolism.
Energy
: how to use your daily energy levels for your advantage.
How to handle stress
: How to change stress habits for your body type.
2 A Brief Description
A
body type
is based upon the genetic makeup of a person. Each individual has one
hormonal gland that tells the rest of the body what to do. In other words, it dictates
how hard a person should work, play, eat, and rest. A hormone is a natural chemical
in our bodies that tells our organs when to work. There is always a balance, and many
times you hear about diets or pills that help give endless energy, without taking into
consideration that for your particular body type, you may require more energy than
another person. People will often times get upset because they don’t have energy like
their neighbor, but that isn’t fair considering you have a different metabolic and body
makeup than your neighbor. You have to work, play, eat, and rest according to your
type.
There are books that describe how to eat for your particular blood type and those
books have very valid points. There is research that also describes how you should eat
for your genetic type. Both genetic type and blood type research run together hand in
hand. This subject has been heavily researched and I have seen it help patients over
and over again when they follow the plan. Body typing is important in the fields of
health, nutrition, physical therapy, and muscle training. There are many body types,
but this will give a brief description of the 3 main genetic body types in the world.
This is a small guide to help you find which body type you fall under.
3 Various Body Types
Thyroid Body Type (Thyroid Gland) or Ectomorph
The thyroid body type utilizes the thyroid as the primary hormonal gland that drives
the bodies’ metabolism. This gland sits right around the trachea in the throat. The
thyroid gland regulates metabolism, or metabolic rate within an individual. It dictates
how much energy we produce in our cells. The body of this individual usually has lean,
slender body frame.
Average height is 5’5”-5’8” for men and women.
The hands of this body type are generally slender, thin-piano type fingers, with
pronounced knuckles. Fingers are usually the same length as the palm length.
Slender frame, slender shoulders, longer-thin bone structure.
4 Crave sweets, candy, chocolate, bread, alcohol, as all these substances stimulate the
thyroid gland. If the thyroid gets burned out, the individual will crave these things to
give them false forms of energy.
If thyroid gland is weak and hormonal production is low then weight gain usually
occurs all over the body except in forearms and lower legs.
The neck region will be thicker with weight gain due to the fact that fat will deposit
around the thyroid as a protective mechanism.
Loss of lateral 1/3 of eyebrow.
Hair and nails becomes brittle and coarse and usually break off easily.
Best energy is in morning-early riser.
Adrenal Body Type (Adrenal Glands) or Mesomorph
The adrenal body type uses the adrenal gland as the primary hormonal gland. The
adrenal gland sits right on top of your kidneys. This gland is responsible in producing
5 and regulating such hormones as adrenaline, testosterone, estrogens, DHEA, cortisol,
etc. The adrenal gland is responsible for giving us stamina to continue working or
playing throughout the day. Thus the individual is muscular, broad shouldered, slightly
taller, “adrenaline junkie” type. This is due to the muscle building effects of the sex
hormones such as adrenaline and testosterone.
Average height is usually 5’7” and above for both men and women.
Hands are usually large with square palms. The fingers are generally tubular and as
long or even longer than the palm of the hand.
If the adrenals are exhausted from stress and are weak, the individual will crave salty
and greasy foods because the adrenals are stimulated by sodium and cholesterol. It
does not mean you should eat these foods, it just shows that the gland is in need of
help.
These individuals are the workaholic type, they stay up late to get their work done.
They get a natural high by continuous work, they are night owls.
When adrenal function is low due to constant stress and adrenaline production,
weight gain occurs all over the body. Weight gain is in the form of water weight all
over the body. It usually is flabby weight and a majority of the weight will occur in
the lower abdomen. This is due to fat build-up around the adrenal glands which rest
in the lower abdominal area. These individuals will have a stomach that will sag, not
a tight “beer belly”.
6 Gonadal Body Type (Ovaries and Testes) or Endomorph
The gonadal body types use the gonadal gland as the primary hormonal gland in the
body. The gland produces a wide range of sex hormones, progesterone, estrogen, and
testosterone.
The average height of this body type is 5’6” and below for both males and females.
Hands are small with tapered fingers. The fingers are shorter than the palm length.
Also, the pinky finger is much smaller compared to the ring finger.
When these body types are weak from exhaustion, the individual will crave dairy
products like cream, cheese, and ice cream. Dairy products contain many hormones
from the cow or goat, and when a person is low in hormone production, they want to
consume those hormones because they can’t produce much due to exhaustion.
7 Genetically they have a hard time producing enzymes to break apart dairy proteins.
This makes them prone to be lactose intolerant. You see this in many Asian cultures
and even eastern European.
Men can develop breast glands when estrogen levels are out of balance.
Weight Gain: Due to high amounts of estrogens-fat deposit depends on which estrogen
is imbalanced.
Estrone: E1
-fat on hips, butt, and thighs (pear shaped)
Estradiol: E2
- fat deposits all over the body
Estriol: E3
-Fat on abdomen (apple shaped)

8 About The Author Dr. Motley’s interest in alternative health
began at the age of six, when his brother
was able to avoid allergy shots and
medications through the use of
chiropractic and natural health
treatments. He was amazed that practical
hands-on treatments could bring lasting
health to his brother. The interest
remained and motivated him to attend
chiropractic school.
Dr. Motley did not fully understand or plan
to use Kinesiology until he attended chiropractic school. An auto accident had left his
neck in chronic injury before he started school. Manual adjustments and physical
therapy did not appear to help his neck or back from pain. Upon entering school, a
kinesiology practitioner helped his neck recover fully in three treatments, and from
that point, kinesiology was his focus.
Upon graduating from Austin Peay State University with a Bachelor in Biology, Dr.
Motley attended Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, MO, where he received
his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2004. After graduating, he moved to Nashville,
Tennessee and started a practice. He has been in full-time practice for nearly a
decade. His practice specializes in clinical kinesiology, functional medicine
integration, nutrition, and Traditional Chinese Medicine philosophy.
