MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For information and interviews, contact Colleen Fraser, Publicist (306) 924-2841 or [email protected] Globe Theatre announces the 12|13 Season REGINA, March 28, 2012 – Three musicals, a sequel to one the most popular comedies in our history, a Canadian classic and an adaptation of one of the most beloved stories in English literature make up the 2012|2013 season at Globe Theatre. Kicking off the Main Stage season is the award-winning musical Billy Bishop Goes to War; the story of a colourful young scrapper and war hero from Owen Sound, Ontario who became a lightning rod for a confident young Canada. It’s followed by the outstanding family classic, The Wizard Of Oz, which will transform the stage into the fantastical Land of Oz and delight all ages. January will see the return of one of Globe’s favourite couples in the sequel to Sexy Laundry Henry and Alice: Into The Wild. Next, the Globe Theatre Actor Conservatory graduates will be featured in Pride and Prejudice, one of the most enduring love stories of all time. In April, we will take audiences into the psyche of an extraordinary young girl in the one woman, half-mask show I, Claudia. Closing out the season is The Drowsy Chaperone; this Tony Award-winning spoof on musicals is an irreverent, made-in-Canada parody that manages to be both an affectionate tribute and a merciless skewering of the rip-roaring Jazz Age. The 2012|2013 Shumiatcher Sandbox Series begins in October with Midsummer [a play with songs], the story of Bob and Helena and a great lost weekend of bridge burning, car chases, wedding bust ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and horrible self-loathing hangovers. Next will be the world premiere of Joey Tremblay’s Bad Blood, an autobiographical account of the Kafkaesque nightmare of Western medicine told in the style of stand up comedy. In February, the Sandbox will present Nightswimming’s production of Blue Box, written and performed by CBC Canada Reads 2012 winner Carmen Aguirre who will share her incredible experiences of revolution and romance from Chile to Hollywood. Blue Box is based on Carmen Aguirre’s memoir Something Fierce. The season ends in May with O.C.Dean, an original production written and performed by Daniel Maslany. For complete play synopses, dates and information please see below. The 12|13 Season will also see the addition of an Apprentice Directing Program, an exciting new initiative which will provide opportunities and experience for aspiring directors to work in a world class theatre. 2012|2013 Evraz Main Stage: Billy Bishop Goes to War By John Gray with Eric Peterson October 10 – 28, 2012 Since its first staging in 1978, Billy Bishop Goes to War has become one of the most popular and often produced theatrical works in Canada's history. Anchored by its haunted hero and his cleareyed memories of war's tragedies and black comedies, this award-winning musical is given extra resonance by songs that are sometimes raucous, sometimes mournful, but always steeped in the realities of wartime. Experience Billy Bishop and connect body and soul with a formative part of Canada's history. The Wizard of Oz By L. Frank Baum With Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg Background Music by Herbert Stothart Directed by Joey Tremblay November 21 – December 30, 2012 This winter, don't miss The Wizard of Oz, a magical adventure for the whole family. Join Dorothy Gale as she is swept away to the Land of Oz and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who she hopes can help her return home. This classic musical is an unforgettable introduction to the theatre for your young ones – and a joyous rediscovery for the child in all of us. Henry and Alice: Into The Wild By Michele Riml Directed by Valerie Ann Pearson January 23 – February 10, 2013 Globe Theatre’s favourite married couple is back - this time armed with Camping for Dummies in this laugh-a-minute sequel to the smash hit Sexy Laundry. A treat for outdoor lovers and haters both, Henry and Alice: Into The Wild will appeal to anyone who has ever looked up at the stars and asked themselves, “Did I charge my phone?” Pride and Prejudice Adapted by Christina Calvit From the novel by Jane Austen Directed by Marti Maraden March 6 – 24, 2013 Adapted from one of the most enduring bestsellers of all time, Pride and Prejudice sparkles with the mischievous wit and timeless characters that made Jane Austen the inventor of the modern romantic comedy. High-spirited and heartfelt, the Globe Theatre's production will delight Austen aficionados and win new fans for this story of improbable love. I, Claudia By Kristen Thomson April 10 – 28, 2013 Performed entirely in mask, I, Claudia is a riveting, hilarious, and heartbreaking journey into the raw psyche of an extraordinary girl with a lot on her mind. Winner of the 2001 Dora Mavor Award for Outstanding New Play, I, Claudia is a mesmerizing theatre experience. The Drowsy Chaperone Music and Lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison Book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar May 22 – June 9, 2013 What do you get when you mix a lost-leading-lady-turned-bride, her debonair groom, a desperate producer, a flaky chorine, a Latino lothario and a pair of jovial gangsters in hiding… er, a pair of pastry chefs? The Tony Award-Winning Drowsy Chaperone of course! This spoof on musicals won’t leave any theatre cliché unturned, or any guest without tears of laughter. 12|13 Shumiatcher Sandbox Series: Midsummer [a play with songs] By David Greig Music By Gordon McIntyre Director Michael Scholar, Jr. October 18 – 28, 2012 Midsummer [a play with songs] tells the story of Bob and Helena and a great lost weekend of bridge burning, car chases, wedding bust ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and horrible self-loathing hangovers.
